Scrawl-canvas

Making HTML5 canvas elements responsive and fun

April 30, 2020 Scrawl-canvas v8 released this month

Finally released the latest version of my Javascript library for the HTML5 canvas element into the wild at the beginning of April. This version gives designers, developers and clients a responsive and interactive canvas element for their web pages, while also making it accessible to non-visual users.

At the same time I built an entirely new website for the library - https://scrawl-v8.rikweb.org.uk/

The best news is that, when I announced the release in a Hacker News "Show HN" post, the post made it to the front page of the HN website. Validation! The library has now been starred over 100 times on GitHub. And GitHub have accepted me into their GitHub Sponsors program.

June 16, 2019 Started work on promoting Scrawl-canvas

After working (intermittently) on my Javascript library for 6 years, I've come to realise that building a great product is not enough. People can't use a product if they don't know about it.

So today I have committed to doing something I don't enjoy: promoting my work to the developer community; telling people about what a fantastic product (in my view) I've built; and doing the hard work of building an online community of developers who want to make use of the HTML5 canvas element in the products they build, but don't like the limitations that stop canvas elements being as useful as they should be.

About

I started coding Scrawl canvas partly to learn Javascript, partly as something to help me break into the tech industry. Then it took over my life for a while - until I finally landed a full-time web developer job...
