Screenjar (acquired)
A simple way to request screen recordings from customers
The idea of selling Screenjar crossed my mind, so I thought I'd list it on Microacquire.com to see what happens. If it didn't sell, I'd be happy to keep running it.
I was mainly interested in selling because I didn't have any solid ideas for how to grow it or where to take it next.
The listing got a lot of interest - way more than I expected. I quickly came to an agreement with a company that's experienced in buying and growing similar products.
The sale process was fairly smooth and I'm happy with the result. This was my first SaaS sale and it's given me more confidence to experiment with building more tiny SaaS products.
Almost a year after getting the first paying customer, Screenjar now has 3 paying customers.
After a solid few months trying to figure our who Screenjar could be most useful for and how I could reach them, I become somewhat discouraged when the people who I thought would be a great fit were not interested.
I couldn't convince myself to spend more time on Screenjar while my other projects were less of an uphill battle. It was a bit of a fun project that I didn't really research or think through before building, so I didn't feel too bad about putting it on the back burner.
I tend to switch my focus between projects and recently I decided to spend some time on Screenjar again to see if I could have more luck trying to grow it this time around.
The first change I made was to add a hard ending to the free trial. Until now, people were nudged to upgrade when their trial expired, but they could ignore those nudges and continue as normal. A few days after adding a proper paywall, one of the companies who has been trialing for a while upgraded.
There are another couple of companies who have been ignoring the upgrade nudges for a while and I'm hoping one or two of them also upgrade.
Next up, I need to figure out how to get more trials! The plan is to start working on integrations with help desk/customer support platforms like Zendesk, Helpscout etc.

I've been at it for 3 years and have 0 paying customers. You have my jealousy good sir. Keep up the good fight!

Just read your post - brutal! Hopefully everything you learned will make the next attempt way more successful 🤞🏼

Good work! Maybe you could partner with these providers and try to get them to pay for and use your tool? Geek Squad might be another company for you to try and partner up with.
Personally I would focus less on a technical integration and more on validation at this point. You have a product, you need more user feedback.

Wow, your product is so simple and cool! Have just tried it.
It can be useful just for any support service, I think. I wish any online store would have it, cause they are highly interactive, and sometimes it's very hard to take a screenshot to point to a problem.
I'm not in your target audience, but I'll share a link with some people.

Thanks I really appreciate that!

this looks awesome.
keep it up.
Based on the usage of Screenjar from early customers, I was feeling quite disheartened. A high % of video requests go unanswered. I assumed this meant the current state of the product was a complete failure.
I emailed customers asking for feedback and looking for ways Screenjar could add more value and to my surprise I learned that even with the current low response rate, Screenjar is still providing some value. One customer (Ward from MemberSpace) even responded with a testimonial I could use.
While there are still tonnes of improvements to make and plenty to figure out, the testimonial (which is now live on screenjar.com) and feedback gives me more motivation to keep trying.
My current challenges are increasing that response rate and figuring out a way to find more potential customers.

My main aim with this update is making it clear what Screenjar actually does. Does this help you understand what Screenjar does? http://screenjar.com/
With only a tiny number of customers and very little traffic, I don't think the landing page is super important, but after posting a link to this thread (https://www.indiehackers.com/post/post-your-landing-page-and-let-others-describe-what-your-project-does-d97f6caf3f?commentId=-MAaYY7LH61e7hTGZZv_) and seeing that people had no idea what Screenjar actually did, I couldn't help but put some time into improving that.
I followed this awesome guide from Julian Shapiro (https://www.julian.com/guide/growth/landing-pages) which I highly recommend checking out

In the long run, I'm planning on building integrations with customer support software for Screenjar (so people can request screen recordings right from within support software)
I'm putting this off until I can prove that Screenjar is actually useful so I don't end up spending weeks building integrations that no one ends up using.
Our one any only paying customer suggested that a simple Chrome extension that lets you create screen recording request links would provide 90% of the benefits that custom integrations would.
This totally made sense to me, so I built and shipped the extension this week. A few people trying Screenjar out have installed it, so I'll know whether it's made a positive impact on usage in a week or so 🤞🏼

Last night, one of the companies trialing Screenjar became the first paying customers and signed up to the $60 per month plan.
It took more than a month to get here and a few promising trial customers didn't end up converting, but I'm happy at least one company sees enough value to start paying.
They've been very supportive and have provided such helpful feedback already, so I couldn't have asked for a better first customer.
There's a lot of work to do, but I'm super excited to keep working on this and see where it goes 😊

Nice work!! The first 10 customers are the hardest to get. 1 down 9 to go!!

I hope this is true, what you’re saying and that after my tent customer it will be somewhat easier to gain more customers... :/
I’m at 8 paying customers now, averaging $42 p/mo but it was really tough to get there ...

Woohoo!
Congratulations! 🙌
Keep collecting that feedback. If you can, reach out to those trial users to find out why they didn't convert. There's gold there in their responses. It's hard to ask but what you'll find out will help you move more people from trial to conversion.

Well done Ramy. I think this would be very useful if you capture user data too (with consent) for diagnostic reasons, such as broswer, language, timezone, screen resolution, OS etc.

Congratulations. A tip I'd give you is the re-work the screen grab of the example conversation on your landing page so that it's on a screen or in an email thread. That way it could be distinguished more easily from the text above and below.
At the moment I am getting a wall of text.
Also listen carefully your paying customer and try and understand the pain you solve for them, and what they consider your USP. This can help you refine your landing page language.
You can reach out to new lead by finding bugs on existing websites and using your own tool to send them feedback. Hopefully if they like it they'll implement it more globally.
It looks like a unique idea, good luck!

Tested out your demo and loved the experience! Can't believe I haven't seen anything else like it.
Will definitely keep your product in mind

Hey Ramy, neat product :) have you considered integrating with the likes of Freshchat, Freshdesk, etc.
As you've clearly demonstrated on the webpage, Screenjar comes to great use in customer support. An integration with customer support software might lead to discovery and adoption of Screenjar.

Thanks for your reply. :)
Is it possible to implement it for mobile screen recording? or is it something that can't be done?
-

The browser APIs used for this wouldn't work on mobile, but there are other options for mobile browser recording, like session recording (tools like fullstory.com do this)
In terms of recording mobile screens outside of the browser without any downloads, I'm not sure it's currently possible.
Have you got a specific use case in mind?
-
1
I see.
Regarding the use case, I was thinking about the similar experience for mobile apps like what your tool does for websites.
I manage a couple of mobile apps and when there is any problem with the app - the users send us screen recording video of the issues.
So I was thinking that it would be a great solution for mobile app developers, if you could somehow managed to do it for mobile too. :)

I am sure you know this, but HIGHTLY recommended to revisit those who did not convert into customers. Why? what is the main reason they did no convert? what they said was the deal breaker for them? was it the product itself? promotion? what changes will they make them reconsider it? This data collection will be the ground for next versions. congrats!! and keep pushing forward!

Wow. How does it work? How it can access my desktop windows? Screen Capture API?
-
2
Yes, exactly - the screen capture API. It's fairly limited at the moment (only works in Chrome, Firefox or Edge), but I'm hoping there's a big enough market of companies who support customers on those browsers and would find this useful.

I love this idea. It has a lot of potential. And congrats on your first paying customer.
After creating a super basic MVP for what was initially called "Usertasks," I tweeted about it to see if people were willing to try it out.
It got way more interest than I expected. Not massive amounts, about 5 people ended up actually trying it out, but that's way more interest than I usually get when tweeting out projects.
While some of the people who tried it out were interested in the usability testing use case I initially pitched, a few asked if the tool could be used for support (asking customers to record their screens when they come across issues that are hard to explain with text).
Because of the support use case that repeatedly came up, I changed the name to a more generic Screenjar and mentioned multiple use cases on the landing page (Usability testing, customer support, QA)
The Product Hunt launch went ok and Screenjar ended the day with ~200 votes. Not amazing, but not a total flop. Most of the people who were keen to try it out were interested in the support use case, so from this day that became the main focus.

I was struggling to find the motivation to work on one of my planned ideas as part of a "6 products in 6 months" challenge, so I started working on an idea that seemed more fun.
The idea was a lookback.io type product that required no extensions or downloads.
The idea was super simple. You want someone to test out your new prototype or design and record their screen while doing it. This tool would let you ask them to do that without asking them to download/install anything to record their screen.
The first step (which we're often told not to do) was to start coding up an MVP locally to see if I could get something working fairly quickly. I didn't really feel guilty for doing no customer research because I was mostly doing this for fun.

Screenjar lets you diagnose support issues without screen sharing calls or remote desktop access. You simply ask your customers to record their screens in their own time by sending them a unique recording link

Congrats! What was the range of offers you got for it?
I wonder myself.
