Add and track serial numbers in Shopify

We built a Shopify app for serial number tracking — here’s what we learned after getting real users

Shopify is great at handling products and orders—but it still doesn’t handle individual item tracking (serial numbers, warranties, expiry dates) well.

That gap is bigger than I expected.

A while ago, I built SerializeIt to solve this. Since then, it’s been adopted by stores that need to track individual units (electronics, refurbished goods, warranty-heavy products, etc.).

Now that it’s in real use, a few things became very clear:

1. This is a “must-have” for a small group—not a “nice-to-have” for everyone
Most stores don’t care about serial numbers. But for the ones that do, it’s critical to operations.

2. Spreadsheets are still the default competitor
Even with a dedicated app, many merchants start (and sometimes stay) with spreadsheets. Switching that behavior is harder than building the product.

3. The real value is post-sale, not just inventory
Serial tracking becomes most important when:

  • handling support requests

  • validating warranties

  • tracing issues back to specific units

4. Edge cases are everything
Returns, replacements, partial fulfillments—this is where things get complex quickly.

I feel like the product is in a solid place now, but I want to push it further.

I’d really value input from others who’ve dealt with similar problems:

  • If you run a Shopify store, how do you handle item-level tracking today?

  • If you’ve built in this space, what’s been hardest to get right?

  • What would make something like this a “no-brainer” to adopt?

Happy to share more details or learn from others building in the Shopify ecosystem.

I built SerializeIt after noticing a gap in Shopify: there’s no simple way to track individual products with serial numbers.
