Minimalist Workout App

October 3, 2019 Experimenting/Success with Instagram Ads

Yesterday I started promoting a number of instagram posts, advertising my newly released workout app, Sets (https://sets.app).

A number of times the promotions would not be approved, I believe the reasoning being the images contained checkboxes ; which is unfortunate as that is a core UI component of my application.

This rule was not being applied consistently however, so I managed to promote a number of my posts displaying the main workout view (which contains checkboxes).

Nonetheless, with less than $50 spent I had ~6000 impressions across a few posts! I had a number of sales also!

My app yesterday placed #4 in the Paid Health/Fitness category on the iOS App Store likely as a result of these ads. (I think this is just the Canadian App Store).

Congratulations! Your app and instagram pages look great. Did you choose to go with video or image ads? Can you share your ad creatives?

Thank you! Just promoted a couple image posts I had created for the account, the creatives were simply a gradient in Sketch with screenshots of the app itself! I tried to use a platform-agnostic format to appeal to both Android & iOS users.

September 26, 2019 Shipped! Sets is now available on the app store!

Sets (https://sets.app) is now globally available on the iOS app store!

I wanted a minimalist workout app with a refined, focused user interface free of clutter and unnecessary features. No ads, social networks, up-sells. This is the first step to fulfilling that goal!

While very much a V1 (with many features/fixes forthcoming), it feels great to have my work see the light of day! It now also feels easier to iterate, pushing incremental changes rather than a huge backlog of unshipped code.

I also registered instagram.com/sets_app & twitter.com/sets_app to complement the website.

Onwards!

Looks slick! What charting library are you using in the app?

September 14, 2019 Complete MVP

I completed the Sets app MVP and dog-fooded it with a couple friends.

I received valuable feedback with respect to missing features that would be required before they used Sets in place of their existing workout apps.

I implemented a number of features that they requested and fixed a few bugs that they had encountered.

August 5, 2019 Idea

I was having difficulty finding an attractive, minimalist workout app that could accurately track my workouts.

Most apps were poorly designed and/or cluttered with un-necessary/distracting features. They also often contained up-sells and advertisements.

I started designing and crafting my ideal workout app. Upon landing, you could immediately drop into one of your pre-built workouts. As you progressed through the exercises of your workout, you would complete the associated sets.
