$hAI (shAI)
The shell‑native AI command assistant
Hey Indie Hackers,
After months of work, we're excited to officially launch our new product, $hAI.
The Frustration
For those of us who live in the terminal, the biggest frustration has always been context-switching to Google commands. We tried the existing AI tools, but they never felt right.
* Full terminal replacements broke our carefully tuned shell configs.
* Standalone CLI tools just traded the browser for a clunky copy-paste workflow.
The ideal solution needed to feel like a true extension of our own minds—an AI that worked within the terminal and shell we already knew and loved.
The Solution: $hAI
So, we built $hAI. It's a native shell plugin that enhances your existing setup rather than replacing it. All your aliases, functions, and .zshrc configs work exactly as before.
The workflow is designed to keep you in the flow state:
1. Type what you want to do in plain English.
e.g., "find all files larger than 10MB modified in the last week"
2. Press a hotkey, and the suggested command appears in your terminal.
3. With another keypress, place it directly onto your command line, ready to be edited or executed.
The entire process happens without copy-pasting.
It's model-agnostic (use OpenAI, xAI, Anthropic, etc.) and available for macOS now, with Windows and Linux in development.
The Ask
We built $hAI to solve our own frustrations with the terminal, and it's already a core part of our daily workflow. We're confident it can improve yours too.
There's a generous free tier for individual use, so you can try it out without any commitment. We're here to answer any and all questions, and are hungry for feedback. We'd love to hear what you think.

About
I was tired of breaking my focus to Google shell commands. I built $hAI to get the command I need right in my terminal, without copy-pasting from a separate tool. It's the AI assistant I always wanted.
