May 21, 2026 SHOKUBAN. — I built an Edo-era AI food magistrate that judges what you're about to eat

Hey IH 👋

Built a small joke app over the past week:

SHOKUBAN. (食判官) — an Edo-era food magistrate AI that passes verdicts on what you're about to eat or drink.

Try it: https://www.shokuban.com/en

How it works: ask "can I have this?" before reaching for the late-night ramen, the third coffee, or the convenience-store cookie. The magistrate replies in three verdicts:

- Aye — go ahead

- Cease — bad idea

- Beyond jurisdiction — for off-topic queries, weaves food back in ("you want to confess to her? Better decide on the celebration dinner first")

Stack: Next.js 16 + Vercel + Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite + Upstash Redis + Flux 1.1 Pro for the character art. Solo build with Claude Code over ~7 days.

Monetization (just enabled today):

- Amazon Associates links inside the "alternatives" suggestions

- Buy Me a Coffee for tips

Open questions for the community:

- Does the English version read naturally? (The character is supposed to sound Shakespearean-meets-Kansai)

- Where else have you found early users for joke / entertainment AI apps?

Feedback welcome 🍃
