December 21, 2020 Shipped a completed platform

We're 3 weeks delayed but we finally were able to sufficiently test and clean up enough bugs to ship our latest app from beta to production!

There is a saying: "No plan survives first contact with the enemy", but we're confident in where we are right now to make it available publicly. Still continuing to talk to our users, get feedback from different communities to better the product going forward.

November 27, 2020 Revamped the landing page

We recently revamped our landing page in preparation of our official launch of Showwcase. We're finally at the stage where we want to publicly share Showwcase in different communities and wanted to polish our site accordingly.

Also, now that we have a lot more to offer on the platform, we wanted the landing page the reflect that so people could learn more.

Hey @tianrongliew love the design on the website. It's very neat and straight to the point. A few suggestions from my side, if you don't mind :)

    1. The header title was vague and I thought it was a website where tech workers could all the latest trending tech news (which obviously isn't the case)

    2. The sub title makes sense but feel could be further improved.

    3. How about making Join Showwcase a button to make it more visible for users?

    4. The network activity and Suggestion accounts is something I have not seen in other similar sites so kudos for it. It's certainly a value added feature.

A few months back I created this weekend project to just display ideas of improving each section of the website, hope it helps https://twice--as-nice.webflow.io/dashboard

    Have a good weekend.

Hey @Nakkeeran! Appreciate the feedback, always looking to improve and this is very helpful.

      1. Yes it will be! It'll be community driven and when we launch at the end of the week, it'll allow you to share quick updates on what's happening.
      2. Anything specific here you think we can change?
      3. Noted!
      4. Thanks!

Took a look at the website and was very useful.

      Have a great holiday season!

        Ideas for the #2

-I think the word "Tech workers" can be replaced with maybe Founders? or Makers?

        • Find new opportunities - does it mean jobs? or does it mean new partnerships? Again the words could be rephrased.

        Hope this helps.

Hey @Nakkeeran, got me thinking a lot. Hmmmm. It's not purely for Founders or Makers, as I think a home for that is more like Makerpad, Makerhub, or even IH. Though, of course, a lot of people in tech are makers and founders.

Our reference to new opportunities will span future of work opportunities for tech workers. Remote jobs, part-time work, creator economy. I think there is a lot that we can experiment with if we can first represent tech workers holistically and build the community. That's our focus right now.

Love the discussion! Thanks so much

True. Makers do not necessarily want to be founders as in they just love creating/playing with new technology and then move onto the next thing.

An interesting angle on the new opportunities, makers could team up build new products or even get notified of new job opportunities based on their tech skill set.

            1. 2

Love that. We think focussing on getting people to share what they're working on is the first step to creating new opportunities to connect and meet others.

People in tech are always tinkering, we hope they can share it on Showwcase!

              1. 1

More and more makers are building in public these days so Showwcase could very well be a good platform for these makers.

November 18, 2020 Showwcase hit 3500 users

After 3 months of continuous hacking, iteration, endless feedback, and a lot of help, we released Showwcase 2.0 which is starting to slowly align with our vision of building a completely new way to represent who we are and build connection with our communities. We're not even close to where we need to be.

October 22, 2020 Release of Showwcase Shows

As tech workers, we're always building new web and mobile apps, working on new data pipelines, analysing new datasets, and tinkering on the latest machine learning algorithms. This is how we learn, what we love to do, and how we grow in our careers.

Most of the time, no one ever hears about it, it's either stored away in a repository, a personal website with low traffic, or slapped onto a resume, never to be seen again. But the things you've worked on are incredibly valuable, it allows you to share your knowledge, your process, and usually leads to more opportunities when others learn about what you're doing. It shows what you're passionate about and lets the community learn from what you're building.

Shows are a flexible way for you to share what you are working, or have worked on, with the rest of the tech community. A show can be a project, a online side-hustle, articles, products, research, and anything you've made.

With Showwcase, you can have everything you've worked on right in your profile, alongside your skills, work, network, and so much more. You can also share it in the community (optional) where users can discuss, learn, like, and test your Shows.

These can be small, or large, can be anything you've worked on personally, or with your WorkedWith teams. It never needs to be perfect, or even optimal, it just has to be something that you want to share! We've build a series of Components in the Show editor that helps you easily share what you're working on.

October 15, 2020 Release of Showwcase WorkedWith

As a software engineer, it's been incredibly frustrating using networks where connections are meaningless. The incentives to connect have been misaligned, it deteriorates the user experience, and worse, it kills the value of your network.

We recently introduced WorkedWith on Showwcase: WorkedWith is a form of connection that you can make between you and other tech workers that you are workng, or have worked, with. It allows you to bring people into your network, but in a more nuanced and direct way.

As tech workers, we're always working on something new. Be it side projects, new products, diving into research, analysing new datasets or starting an online business. Sometimes we do it alone, and other times we're working on these with others.

WorkedWith allows you to add those valuable teams of yours into your network. Now the community can see who are truly in your network, the valuable people that you've had a real working relationship with!

Your network is valuable, protect it!

July 1, 2020 MVP

In July, we came up with the most basic MVP where I shared it with 40 or so friends. Built completely in Javascript, AWS, and React, you could only share what you were working on with what we now call Shows.

I got my friends to post a few projects, test the site, and give their feedback on what features they would like to see. There was basically no traffic but myself visiting the site. We called this beta and were fixing all the bugs and adding features for 2 months.

July 19, 2019 Came up with my idea

In 2017, I moved to San Francisco to learn to code. After a year of hardcore coding, building projects, and endless studying, my front page to join the tech industry was an A4 resume. There was no way I could share what I was passionate about, all the projects I've built, and was a terrible way to feature my skills (most people would just slap a list of technologies on it) - completely antiquated.

My alternatives were LinkedIn (Horizontal, boilerplate, with meaningless connections), build a personal website (time-consuming, no visibility, and poorly designed), or Github (which I love, but where I had hundreds of repositories, most idle, and was rigid to what I could showcase).

On top of this, every business was transitioning into a technology business. Tech workers are increasingly the most important asset to every business, company, and idea. The demand for tech workers was growing exponentially, and the resulting outcome was that millions of people were moving into the tech industry every year.

In sum, the number of tech workers in the world was increasing, yet no platform was specifically optimised for our representation, our content, and our workflows.

When the pandemic hit, everything was accelerated and I went all-in on Showwcase in May 2020. We're entering the Future of Work era for tech workers, defined by teams working from anywhere, flexible workforces, on-demand augmentation teams, gig work, independent creators, people businesses, and solopreneurs. We needed a new platform built for us.

At Showwcase, our goal is to build a completely new way to represent who we are, build connection with our communities, and gain access to these future-of-work opportunities.
