December 11, 2019 The first dollar. It feels unreal!

I'm not gonna lie, I did dance around a bit.πŸ•ΊπŸ•ΊπŸ•Ί

After just over a year of working on this project, I finally received a donation / pro-member signup! I did think it would take a while due to the competition and for what is on offer... however it feels great to validate the project that it should be possible to progress further from here.

Again, I owe this to the community here, thanks very much everyone for the inspiration!✌️✌️✌️

Definitely... some projects are definitely harder to know if or when to keep going. I could still be in dream mode to make this work, but let's find out.πŸ‘Š

      Thanks Insanity!

Congrats Thomas! Could you share your product for us?

    Congrats :)

Congrats! I'm curious how you have gained users/traffic so far? And out of the year you have been working how long would you estimate you have been 'launched' and had users on the site?

    1. 1

Good question, I haven't spent much time pushing the product at all and tried to spend a lot of time building the product well. Timewise I have spent a whole bunch, mainly because I have been teaching myself how to code. I rebuilt the filtering system three times overπŸ˜‚. Though there has been some key moments in where I have received some spikes of traffic. First was getting found by Teton Gravity Research. They wrote a quick article when my site hadn't even reached MVP. They are a huge PR company, one of the biggest in the Ski industry I think. I really wasn't ready for that traffic. Quickly stressed out and mocked-up a Mailchimp signup form. But it got me my first signups/ users. This was probably the 6-month mark and was the highest spike of traffic.

Next up I did a Reddit post with a video. Which got another spike.

Posting on Product Hunt got another one and a retweet from Pieter Levels got some quality traffic just the other day.

Even this post got me quite a lot of traffic.

Congrats @krank3n! What a milestone and I can see this product has great potential. Keep shredding! πŸ€™πŸ‚

Thanks man. It means a lot to me that you can see potential in it. I also think it has a huge amount of potential. Hopefully, I can scale it well and take it down the right route

    Congrats man!

I'm probably not the target audience (but I do love snowboarding) as I don't know what shredding means :D I assume the a Ski Bum is someone who tries to spend most of his/her time on the mountain and pays for it by offering ski lessons? So, it's kind of a nomadlist for people who are crazy about skiing, nice idea :-)

Some things I noticed / unsolicited advice.

    • "Uncrowded" felt like a weird label, maybe the word "Serenity" better suites the linked score meter?
    • I'd add the words "Find the" before "Best Ski Resorts to Live, Work and Shred"
    • The ??? p/m is confusing/weird, if the data isn't ready yet (don't have enough data maybe?) I'd simply leave it out. Maybe showing the total shred score on each panel would be nice as well.

    Anyway, keep on rocking!

Hey Rick! Thanks, dude, really appreciate your comment and thoughts.

The term Shred is lingo for both acts of skiing, snowboarding. I felt like it was a good choice of word because it means both, not either-or. Plus fits into the culture well.

Yea being a ski bum and digital nomad is similar yet very different at the same time, you do have a very small cross over but generally, the market is very different. IMO.

Thanks for bringing the label up, I'll discuss it with a few people and see how they feel.

I was thinking about removing Best and just... "Ski Resorts to Live, Work, and Shred" But maybe using "Find the" will help with SEO. What are your thoughts?

Someone has already mentioned the ??? isn't a good look, I hoped to get the average living cost per month in there, but don't have enough data yet, I do however have the daily lift ticket prices, so maybe I will replace it for the meantime, while more data comes in.

      Thanks again Rick!🀘

      1. 1

Thanks for explaining! Makes much more sense now :D

I think the "Find the" helps describe what users can use the website for and indicates that there are bad ski resorts as well and using your product makes sense to make sure they don't go to a bad one.

"Best Ski Resorts to Live, Work and Shred" > You only maintain a list of the best ski resorts

"Find the Best Ski Resorts to Live, Work and Shred" > You help your users to find the best resorts but your data also contains resorts that aren't fantastic (but maybe are fantastic for users with certain preferences).

December 5, 2019 Emotional ride on Product Hunt

Right now, Shred Index is holding first place for today... but how did this happen? πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”Yesterday It launched and only received a few votes.

My buddy @anakravitz and I were watching the positioning and it yesterday it never made it on to the homepage. So, of course, it didn't get much attention. She mentioned this has happened to one of her friends before and told me to contact the staff... as maybe they will repost it. Sure enough, I did, as I had nothing to lose. PH reposted it without any hesitation on the homepage. Giving me a bit of a head start I think with 20+ something upvotes.

This is crazy... it's gone from, my product is shit and I suck, to wow I am amazing!🀣🀣🀣 Jokes... let's keep it cool😎

My lesson here is... to always reach out if you get a chance, maybe you will create some opportunity for yourself or for others.

December 4, 2019 Published on Product Hunt!

It's funny, every day after uploading to Product Hunt. I kept delaying the day to launch, to fix more any more stuff.

I keep falling into the trap of wanting more features and everything to be perfect, even though it's still far from it.

It may not have any traction yet, but it feels good to have finally say it's launched.

Nice! Happy to see Telluride on the explainer video :)

    1. 2

      πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰ I'm guessing it's your go-to resort?

      1. 2

Sure is! I'm not from Telluride, but my parents bought some land there before it became well-known, and we've been going ever since.

        1. 1

Your parents are smart! What an awesome place to have some land. So are you flying there from Mexico this winter? Pretty sure you're living my dream lifestyle

          1. 2

Yep yep! Current lifestyle ain't too bad :)

  2. 2

@krank3n It is all about taking that first step. ;) Congrats on publishing on Product Hunt!

    1. 2

haha thanks, Bronson πŸ‘Š, yea that first step is difficult! There is a lot of competition for ski resort websites out there. Maybe this has contributed to my nerves of publically posting itπŸ€” and getting to what I think is an MVP.

      Thanks for the optimistic vibe:)

      1. 2

Even if you don't achieve what you're hoping for, it is still progress and 99% of the time there are lessons to be learned.

        1. 2

oh.... the list of lessons has been endless πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  3. 1

Well done on launching. Go for 90% perfect when you launch. There's no way to ever get to 100% (because "hey look at that border pixel right there on the bottom of the footer on that link, I should change that" is always going to happen) and 100% is always going to take a long time.

Well done in the Hunt though, just upvoted your product. Great idea too, and fantastic execution.

    1. 1

Wise words Frank! It's crazy difficult to tell when it's at 90% though... especially if you have been working on it solely. It's not until @anakravitz mentioned after I integrated a quick points system, she said, "I think it's ready for product hunt". great to get some third perspective on this.

Thanks so much for upvote and being apart of the indie hacker community, you guys are the ones who inspired me to learn to code and build this!πŸ‘Š

      1. 2

My 90% perfect is when I think it'll do what it needs to do, it doesn't make me cringe when I look at the design, and it still has some changes that would make it look better but they wouldn't be necessary to right now get the most out of it.

        1. 1

That's awesome you are able to keep a clear focus on what's important. I think the issue for me is that this has taken me a long time to build, due to the learning process. So I think over an extended period of time, it's hard to keep the perspective of what's really important. This could also be due to the lacking of pre-planning.πŸ€”

November 28, 2019 Made a User-Based Points System

After learning how to code this past couple of years, writing my own user-based points system wasn't too difficult at all.

It's surprising to see how far my coding skills have improved, as just one year ago, it's would be very difficult for me to accomplish this and wouldn't even know where to start. But now I can comfortably code it with really any difficulties.

What's your goal with this point system? Does it work for you?

    1. 1

      Good question David.

I guess with any point system, it helps show progression and status of completion. For me personally, as the founder, it's a great way to see who has contributed how much to the platform. I can instantly see the top users and I assume it helps encourage others with interaction.

I definitely think it could have some improvements added to it, but I am trying to prioritize what's important right now.

November 13, 2019 Published 1st Podcast

I had the first Shred Index published on iTunes today.

I learned that it can take a long time to edit, but it is an excellent way of getting the word out about the product, as you can see traffic coming in from the followers of the interviewee.

Here is a link to check it out:

October 16, 2019 100 Signups

Made a short video post on Reddit that explained the MVP I was making, had some really great feedback with about 600+ upvotes and 100+ comments. From that, about 80 people signed up to tick Shred Index over 100 signups.

Felt like quite an overwhelming response at the time as I hadn't had much validation that people would like what I am building
