SignalPod

Social prediction platform

April 21, 2020 Week 1 update

It's been one week since the launch of SignalPod's prototype. I've been marketing it on social media and so far have managed to get over 100 visitors, 10 of whom are tracking signals.

I always like to gauge interest with a prototype before spending too much time on a project. I prefer prototypes to landing pages because measuring actual usage is more telling than simply sign ups (it's easier to sell an idea than to get people to use a product). These early results have been encouraging and have given me validation that there is enough interest in the idea to keep working on it.

Onward!

April 16, 2020 Prototype launched

Got a basic prototype launched for https://signalpod.net after about a week of coding. I wanted to get something super simple up quickly but admittedly spent more time on it than I wanted.

The current feature-set lets you create an account and track signals that others have sent to be notified of their outcome. It will also keep score of how many "correct" signals a user sends vs "incorrect" ones (Signals vs Noise). Sending signals is currently limited to a handful of users but hoping to open this up soon.

The tech stack I chose was pretty simple:

  • Python/Flask
  • React/Material-UI
  • PostgreSQL
  • All running on Google App Engine

    Tried the product
If you add the following I think it would reduce admin for you

    1. Each prediction should come with a source of truth
For example, when it says sports viewership will increase, you can say neilsen or espn or some specific source
    2. Also what is the ante? Maybe have points ( not tied to real value, just say points )

      Hey Naveen :)

Thanks for the suggestions! The ante is going to be time. You can only send one signal a day by default. If you correctly predict something, you can send an extra signal. If you don't, you can't send for a day.

Soon you'll be able to "echo" signals you think will come true or "jam" signals you don't think will happen. Echoing/jamming will have the same rewards/consequences as sending the signal, e.g. if it comes true and you echo'd it you can send an extra signal.

Also tracking "points" in the form of signal-to-noise ratios for users.

    Hey Navin,
Nice Name 😋 have you looked at metaculus intrade and the crypto prediction marketplaces?
What made you build a prediction marketplace?
Could you restrict login to twitter ?

Thanks for pointing out metaculus, hadn't heard of them before. The prediction markets I was familiar with like Augur and PredictIt all operated on currency so I wanted to build one that did not in order to incentivize more people to participate and hopefully get more accurate predictions from a larger crowd.

April 7, 2020 Acquired SignalPod.net

Today I registered SignalPod.net.

For those wondering what the name means, here's the story.

Signal is for extracting the signal from the noise. Our goal is to amplify the real signal of what people think will happen and filter out the noise from bad actors.

Pod is the name for a group of whales. Why whales? Whales use echolocation to navigate underwater where vision can be murky. They are also extremely social animals so I thought it would be a fun metaphor.

There you have it, SignalPod!

I think the word "acquired" might not be the right word. Not trolling but I felt click baited after clicking on this milestone.

      Whoops, hadn't thought of that.

    Hey there.

First of all, I agree is @shiva_prabhakaran, the title was really click-baity.
Second of all, and, sorry if I'm rude, but from your description of what a signal and a pod is, in this post, I've still no idea what your startup does.

Maybe some more (business centric) explanation or pitch would work?

    BR,
    Nikola.

Did you reach out to see how much the owner of signalpod.com wanted?

    1. 1

Yeah, I did ask after I bought the .net. They wanted $18k!

April 6, 2020 Predicting the future

2020 has been a year filled with uncertainty. When will the coronavirus pandemic end? Is now a good time to invest in the stock market? Who will win the presidential election?

Many people make predictions everyday but there isn't a place to track these predictions over time to see who really knows what they're talking about. There's also a missing incentive for people to be accurate with their predictions.

Prediction markets are one solution to this problem but not everyone wants to put down money on what they think will happen. Is there another way?

SignalPod is a prediction market based on social currency instead of monetary currency. It tracks predictions over time and rewards those with accurate predictions by amplifying their voices and penalizes inaccurate predictions by diminishing them.

It's fascinating to see how prediction markets have gained attention as a means of tracking and incentivizing accurate predictions. While monetary-based prediction markets have been popular, not everyone is comfortable placing bets on their predictions. That's where projects like SignalPod come in, offering a unique approach by utilizing social currency instead of monetary currency.

SignalPod aims to create a prediction market that tracks predictions over time and rewards those who make accurate predictions while penalizing inaccurate ones. By amplifying the voices of accurate predictors and diminishing the influence of those with a history of inaccuracies, SignalPod seeks to create a platform where users are incentivized to provide valuable insights.

However, it's worth noting that the project's early access announcement dates back to 2020, and it seems that after three years, it is still labeled as "coming soon." This raises questions about the current status and progress of SignalPod. Has the project encountered challenges or undergone significant changes during its development? An update from the team behind SignalPod would provide valuable insights into the future of this intriguing concept.

Looking forward, it's worth considering the potential of platforms like Polkamarkets as the future of prediction markets. Polkamarkets leverages the power of 3 Networks - Polygon, Moonbeam and Moonriver - to offer a decentralized and user-friendly prediction market platform. With its robust features and growing community, Polkamarkets is poised to shape the future of prediction markets by offering trustless forecasting and a wide range of prediction opportunities.

As we await updates on SignalPod's progress, exploring existing platforms like Polkamarkets can provide valuable insights into the advancements and potential of prediction markets within the evolving landscape of decentralized finance.
