My FIRST paying customer via AdWords this morning!

While I'm still working on developing the app, I've been in a bit more of a sales mode lately because I feel like I have enough built out that I can validate the idea.

I met with a branding agency in town last week to show them the idea, they said they loved it and would probably use it someday, but weren't ready to pay for it and use it right away.

I decided to throw $100 into Google Adwords with a limit of $15 a day to see if the landing page and the app could convert anyone, even if it wasn't at scale.

I was a bit disappointed the first day that I got 20-some clicks and NO ONE even created an account! Over the weekend I got 5-6 people total creating free accounts, which felt good. I followed up with each of them via email to get feedback from them.

Then this morning I got that lovely first Stripe notification on my phone to let me know that someone had signed up for a subscription.

AWESOME!

It's probably not sustainable to keep throwing money into AdWords right now as an indie hacker, but it did help to get me that first customer and show that the idea could potentially work.

Congrats! So what was your acquisition cost for that customer?

      Thanks!

Getting 60 clicks cost roughly $90 of the $100 I put in. They are on a $19/month plan, so assuming they continue their account I would need 5 months to make that worth it. Not terrible, but not great either. I'd prefer not to be totally dependent on paid ads.

My plan is to work a lot more on articles and content for SEO purposes as well as getting some links around the web on review sites and articles. I find that stuff harder to focus on than development, so I was hoping a paid customer would motivate me a bit!

Interesting! Perhaps with some ad/landing-page optimization, you can get the CAC down. Writing articles and stuff is pretty hard to get motivated on because it's just not as quantitative as writing code and you don't see a result right away but they can be pretty effective. Good luck!

Thanks! No sorry, it’s a custom thing that evolved over time. Took inspiration from design apps like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
