April 10, 2026 Silkwave Voice - On-device AI Notetaker for Mac, summaries via Apple Intelligence's ChatGPT

Hey IH 👋

I just shipped Silkwave Voice, a macOS app that records meetings, lectures, and podcasts, transcribes them on-device, and then uses Apple Intelligence's ChatGPT extension to turn the transcripts into structured summaries.

Why I built it

I wanted something that:

  • Captures system audio directly (no bot joining the call)

  • Runs transcription locally so my audio never leaves the Mac

  • Still gives me a useful summary at the end, not just a wall of text

  • Stays out of the way during meetings

macOS 26 made this possible. Apple shipped on-device speech models that are genuinely good, and Apple Intelligence exposes a ChatGPT extension I can reach from a sandboxed Mac App Store app via Apple Shortcuts - so users get summaries without ever needing a subscription or API keys.

What it does

  • Records mic, system audio, or both. Works with Zoom, Teams, Meet, Slack huddles - anything you can hear on your Mac.

  • Transcribes in 10 languages using Apple's on-device models. No internet required, no per-minute cost.

  • Summarizes transcripts into structured notes (key topics, action items, decisions). The app ships a bundled AI Integration Shortcut that you install once; Silkwave Voice then invokes it to pass the transcript through Apple Intelligence's ChatGPT extension. Only the transcript text is sent - never the audio - and summaries are fully optional.

  • Lives in the menu bar. Start, pause, resume, switch audio sources, and change languages from a compact popover. There's also an optional menu bar timer so you can see at a glance that recording is still active.

  • Searches across all your past recordings, transcripts, and summaries.

Stack & constraints

  • Flutter, Dart, Swift, SwiftUI

  • macOS 26+ only

  • Mac App Store distribution

  • One-time purchase after a 7-day free trial - no subscription

The macOS 26-only requirement is a real tradeoff. It cuts my addressable market significantly, but it's also what makes the privacy + zero-cost transcription story possible.

What I'd love feedback on

  • Does the on-device angle resonate, or is "the cloud is fine" the dominant view here?

  • For those of you using bot-based notetakers today, what would make you switch?

  • Is the macOS 26 requirement a dealbreaker, or fair given the capability?

Happy to answer anything about the build, the Apple Intelligence integration, on-device transcription.

About

macOS 26 provides on-device speech recognition models, system audio capture, and AI summarization through Apple Intelligence. Silkwave Voice brings all of that together into one app: record, transcribe, and summarize.
