September 20, 2019 Updates to Landing Page

Gave the landing page a touch of elegance and professionalism. Think it looks quite good now. No real progress on the actual product itself this week apart from a few styling things.

Let me know what ya think!

Looks quite nice. We ourselves use Trello and are pretty satisfied with it.

Why should I choose Simple Board over Trello? What killer features do you offer that others are missing? I could imagine that many people have this question in mind when visiting your landing page so I would probably improve on your UVP here.

    Best wishes

I'm planning on building a productivity tool that combines the best bits of all the bigger brands and packaging it into an affordable solution. Fully customisable with an addictive UI look, feel and interactivity. πŸŽ‰ I appreciate some people are stuck with what they know in current providers, Simple Board is going to provide a fresh, modern, addictive approach into the market which will sky rocket productivity in individual projects and team projects.

      1. Less clutter. More focus. Especially on the kanban board page. This will be completely focused in on your project and tasks only. Think of a clean modern writing app these days with hardly any GUI. It lets you focus on writing. Now apply the same sort of style and feature to a kanban board. Very nice to look at, awesome, addictive functionality within the board which motivates you to get your project tasks or tickets done so you can interact with the board.

      2. Intuitive task list view which will let you efficiently and effectively see your workload in a slick, productive list - Again, gives you that ability to really focus in on what's going on.

      3. There will be some project specific settings in terms of if it's a personal or team project which will be highly beneficial.

      4. I know trello has customisations in there as well but Simple Board will provide this in a configuration / settings page which you control completely from here, again, separating this cluttering functionality from the actual board itself, allowing you to really focus in.

A lot more I could say at this stage and a lot more that will most likely be added as I develop.

      1. 2

Just an idea: what if you test with some sticky badge or some small notification which appears with a question: "How it's different from Trello and other similar planning tools?" And then simply a link with explanation which you provided there? I would propose to AB test it in case major part of your visitors (potential customers) will have the same question...

        1. 1

Brilliant idea. Simply, present a popup with the answer in a nice way. I like that idea. Means I'm immediately eliminating that question

  2. 3

    ... simple! πŸ‘

I recommend adding real copy into the hero image, so I can see it actually being used. Will feel more real.

    1. 1

So a short video demonstration maybe instead of the Image I have there? :-) Thanks for your input!!

      1. 3

I think @joelaguero means actual copy instead of "this is a ticket header" - this was my suggestion also. No video, just a real example of your product

        1. 2

Ah yes Ofcourse I understand πŸ˜πŸŽ‰ will get this changed tomorrow. Awesome thank you so much for your input and feedback!!!

  3. 2

The sign up buttons are disabled. Isn't that one of the most important conversions for you to make?

    1. 1

Yes but i'm in development. This is a pre-release landing page, below the signups is "Coming soon, Join the pre release list" which will direct you back to the top where you can enter your email for free, early access

      1. 2

Or activate the buttons and if they click on them show a modal with the sign-up form.

      2. 2

Perhaps you could add a scroll-to action if they click on the sign up button :)

        1. 2

          I've implemented that in now!

        2. 2

Yeah i like this idea. Nice one. It'll basically be the same as the below "Join" link. Thanks for that πŸŽ‰ I don't know why i never thought of this? haha! What do you think overall?

          1. 2

You're welcome! I think the landing page overall does its job. Perhaps the logo in the navbar is a bit too large and pushes the more important content a bit further below the fold. I would make it about 50% smaller.

You could also add a further 1-2 px distance between the email sign-up input and the explanatory text and make the explanatory text a bit lighter gray so the color focus is on the input and the button.

Anyways, good luck with the kanban board. I think trello does something similar, but you probably know about them.

            Cheers!

            1. 2

It's feedback like this that really inspires me dude. Thank you very much!

      Appreciate the kind words!

September 16, 2019 Im building the next big productivity project tool

As the title suggests!

After my launch and recent success of TrackMyLift, I've seriously caught the bug for building side projects.

This is Simple Board.
A productivity tool built for teams AND individuals which features a fully customisable Kanban styled board.

No release date etc, just going to work on it as it comes! I've done a good bit of the Kanban side of it.

For all features and to sign up to the pre release list check it out;

Hey Alan! I've been following your updates on IH for a while now, and it's awesome to hear that TrackMyLift is doing well. I want to reiterate what @emekaonu said - you might want to reconsider starting a new side project so soon after launching your previous one.

I've also tried to start a new side project soon after launching another one. The problem I faced, and I didn't realize it until much later on, was that I was avoiding doing the work I didn't want to do on Product A (marketing, design improvements), because I would always tell myself, "well, Product B needs me to do X", with X being what I enjoyed doing (building new features).

My recommendation would be to try get to a point where you are earning enough from TrackMyLift that you can fund development/work for itself. That way, you can spend your valuable time just deciding what TrackMyLift needs, then hire someone who's an expert to do that thing. Then you can spend whatever's left of your time on your new product(s).

Just my 2 cents! Good luck on your new product regardless!

    1. 2

I appreciate this! I really do! Simple Board is a really slow burning project though, I'm not putting any dates on it, I'm not putting any serious time into it.

For example tonight I've just spent 6 hours on TrackMyLift implementing enhancements based on customer suggestions and working on some marketing.

Probably won't do anything on Simple Board until Sunday again πŸ˜„

I completely understand your point though and I will most definitely take it on board! I'm aware that it could get distracting, but I'm not allowing it to be distracting to TrackMyLift! :D

And here's the latest milestone for TrackMyLift in regards to my work the past week and what I've done in the last week for TrackMyLift.

  2. 6

Why not put this energy on TrackMyLift? I see you are making money already.

    1. 1

I wasn't planning on posting this milestone until the end of the week, but needs must lol. https://www.indiehackers.com/product/trackmylift/-Lovzy0f15BUVK3ATM_d

    2. 1

I wanted to work on something new as well. I've always wanted to have a stab at creating a nice productivity tool.

TrackMyLift is generating 3-5 signups every day without fail. I'm up to 20+ paying customers.

Believe me I'm still putting energy into it 🀣πŸ’ͺ🏻πŸ”₯

        1. 1

Thank you so much dude. What you think?

  3. 2

Love it Alan! There’s definitely a market for this

    1. 1

Thank you very much Adam. Appreciate the kind words. I'm excited to build it. I use kanban boards and project management tools every day all day in my full time job. I lead a mobile development team and we currently use a mixture of Jira / Trello. I was originally planning on switching to something a bit more focused and nice for the team as an internal project management tool for the team. But there's nothing out there that would fit perfectly. So why not build it myself? πŸŽ‰

  4. 2

Don't want to discourage, but what exactly is the difference between Simple Board and Trello? (which I'm on free plan and pretty happy)

    1. 2

      Brilliant question -

I will also be including a Free Plan with Simple Board - Which i think will be a lifetime thing... I'm yet to put that into the pricing part of the popup.

Let me know what you think so far. I'm determined to convert you over once I get it released πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ’Ž

      1. 3

Thanks for taking time to answer in such details. But for now I don't feel converted - Trello doesn't look cluttered to me, I can turn on/off the details I want (like "q" key shows only cards I'm assigned to). In fact, I think Trello is as minimal as it gets while still being USEFUL.

I guess it's about look&feel of actually using the tool, but so far I don't see any PROBLEMS in Trello, but maybe I'm just wrong audience for you, maybe other people do see Trello as cluttered and unfocused.

Though, after trying many project management tools with different clients (Trello, Asana, JIRA, Basecamp, Monday, Github issues etc) I noticed one pattern - it's not the tool that makes info cluttered. It's people. No tool would help if people don't have structured and clear processes and discipline to follow them.

        1. 1

Thats a very good reply - I respect that greatly. It is completely about the people. My idea here is to build a slick, modern tool which is aimed at increasing productivity and giving the big names a run for their money in doing so.

You might not be converted yet, but it's struck a conversation - Which is exactly what I wanted. 😊 It's too early in the process to be "converted" as of yet anyway, join the pre release list and when it's being released, give it a try out and feedback to me :)

Just a few questions for you:

          1. What do you use Trello for ?
          2. Is there anything you wish Trello had or did differently? (honestly)
          3. What is it you love about Trello?

Just some general questions I can then use to aid in the very initial stage of https://simpleboard.tech.

          1. 2

This is a video how we use it with our team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rJH23X2Xuc

The only problem with Trello I see currently is their Android app has got very slow and buggy. Apart from that - a happy user for 5+ years. I love simplicity and quick sync between whatever device I use - macbook, chrome extension, windows computer, android phone, android tablet etc.

            1. 1

Thanks for that feedback! You've been a great input to this!

      2. 2

Point #1 resonates with me. I'm working on a writing app and this is the impetus. Excited to see where this goes!

        1. 1

Thank you so much for the kind words. Yeah my plan is to really focus in on the goal at hand on each screen / section. My pre-alpha stage Kanban board is very focused already as you'll see on the landing page popup. Lots to do and a slow burner project as it's more of a side side project πŸ’ͺ🏻 sign up to the pre release list 😁

          Appreciate it!!!

About

There are big branded software tools for managing projects as a team on a huge scale and individual software tools which are very very basic. Simple Board combines the best bits/features of them both and does it better.
