April 19, 2022 On track to hit $500 in revenue in April!

Simple Goods is growing again and this month it's on track to cross $500 in revenue. 🚀

What's interesting is that it currently makes money via subscriptions ($9–$29/mo) and transaction fees. Right now it's about a 40/60 split (transaction fees making up a bulk of the revenue).

Something to explore in the future as I experiment with different pricing is dropping monthly fees in exchange for higher transaction fees; dropping transaction fees and raising subscription prices; or something entirely new.

We'll see!

March 17, 2022 New marketing site launched

I shipped an all new marketing site for Simple Goods this week! This is the first time the site has seen an overhaul since ~2015. 😅

Besides now being mobile optimized and getting a fresh new design, this new site now much better communicates the product and all of the value that's been added over the last several years.

It turns out if you add features to your SaaS but don't tell anyone no one will know. 😁

I leaned on a few tools, apps, and services to speed up the build:

  • Figma for design
  • Creative Market for some graphic assets
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Tailwind UI for some pre-built HTML components
  • Netlify for continuous deployment & hosting
  • Fathom for privacy-first web analytics

I'll now be letting the new site run for a week or two to see how it performs against the previous one before I start shipping some copy tests.

Let's go!

January 3, 2022 Going full-time on Simple Goods

At the end of last year I decided to leave my cushy role as VP of Design @Buffer to focus on my own ventures full-time.

One of those ventures is Simple Goods, a SaaS app for selling digital products.

Back in 2013 I started Simple Goods as a fun weekend hack project to learn Ruby and hone my product design skills.

Since then it's seen countless iterations, over 9k signups, and helped entrepreneurs earn over $1.8M. But since about 2015 it's pretty much been in maintenance mode. I've fixed a few bugs, ensured SSL certs were up to date, etc.

This year though my plan is to give Simple Goods the attention it deserves. My plan is to ship some much needed updates and bug fixes, design a new marketing site, and do some proper product marketing for it.

My goal is to reach $5,000 MRR by end of 2022.

Let's go!
