Smart Locale Search
A privacy-first local AI search engine for personal computer
Hi everyone,
I’ve been working on a small open-source project called Smart Local Search.
The idea is simple: searching your computer should feel more like remembering something, not guessing file names.
Most file search tools rely on keywords. That works if you remember the exact filename or text inside a document. But in practice we often remember things differently.
For example:
photo with mountains and a lake
jwt authentication middleware
diagram of system architecture
Traditional search tools struggle with this type of query.
So I started building a semantic search tool that runs completely locally.
Key ideas:
• search files, photos and code using natural language
• everything runs locally
• no cloud
• no telemetry
• open source
GitHub:

Right now it’s an early version, but the goal is to explore a better way to search local data.
I’d really appreciate feedback from other builders:
Would you use something like this?
What would you want it to search?
What features would make it useful?
Thanks! 🙌
About
Modern computers contain thousands of files: code, photos, documents, notes, screenshots. But finding something inside them is still surprisingly difficult. Most search tools rely on keywords and filenames.
