SmartPetGuide

Honest smart pet device reviews — no fluff, no sponsors

May 24, 2026 I built a pet tech review site because AI content is ruining Google — 70+ articles, 0 sponsors

Most pet product reviews on Google are AI-generated garbage that clearly never tested the actual products. When my cat got sick and I needed a reliable automatic feeder, every "Top 10" list was useless.

So I built SmartPetGuide — a research-backed review site for smart pet devices.

What it is:

- 70+ in-depth articles: reviews, comparisons, buying guides, breed-specific picks

- 24 products in 5 categories (feeders, litter boxes, fountains, cameras, GPS)

- Every product verified against real Amazon data (BSR, ratings, review counts)

- Zero sponsored placements — every recommendation is independently researched

Tech stack:

- Astro 5 static site on Vercel (loads under 2 seconds)

- Tailwind CSS with a custom editorial design system

- Products.json as single data source — every page auto-syncs

- Full Schema.org structured data for AI search visibility

Traffic & monetization:

- Currently in Google's sandbox (domain is 6 days old)

- Monetized via Amazon Associates

- Building Pinterest/Facebook/Reddit as traffic channels

- Just launched on Product Hunt (going live May 27)

What I've learned so far:

1. Amazon search queries ≠ Google search queries (verified this with Trends data)

2. Schema markup and internal linking matter way more than content volume for new sites

3. The pet tech niche is dominated by Forbes/Wired/CNN — but their reviews are often thin

I'd love feedback from anyone who's built a content/affiliate site! Especially on:

- When did you break out of Google's sandbox?

- What's your split between SEO vs social traffic?

- Any tips on getting the first few natural backlinks?

About

I built SmartPetGuide because when my cat got sick, I couldn't find trustworthy pet device reviews. Every Google result was either AIgenerated or sponsored. I wanted a site where pet parents could get honest, data-backed
