March 16, 2026 I built a pet merch store that makes money while I sleep - here's exactly how

I'm a solo dev who built Snoutique - a made-to-order pet lover store selling hats, mugs, stickers, totes, and canvas prints.

No inventory. No warehouse. No employees.

The stack:

  • Next.js 16 + TypeScript

  • Printful for fulfillment (they print, pack, and ship)

  • PayPal for payments

  • Vercel for hosting

  • Total monthly overhead: ~$20

What's working:

  • Print-on-demand = $0 inventory risk. I only pay when someone buys.

  • Flat $6.99 shipping, free over $75. Simple beats clever - AOV went up when I stopped doing percentage discounts and just set a clear free-shipping threshold.

  • Post-purchase upsells. After checkout, I offer a complementary product (bought a hat? here's a matching mug). Each upsell is its own PayPal order - no cart rebuilding, no friction. This alone added ~15-20% to revenue.

  • SEO + Pinterest. I wrote a script to auto-generate Pinterest product pins from my catalog. Organic traffic is slow but compounds.

What I'd do differently:

  • Should have launched with 3 products, not 10. Most of my early sales came from 2 SKUs.

  • Spent too long on the code, not enough on distribution. The product was "ready" weeks before anyone saw it.

Numbers (keeping it real):

  • Built in 5 days solo

  • Currently doing $0/mo

Happy to answer any questions about the tech, the fulfillment setup, or the POD model in general.

About

Snoutique exists because pet lovers deserve a way to express that bond beyond just a leash and a food bowl. I started it to create unique, high-quality products: hats, mugs, totes, canvas prints.
