June 23, 2026 The problem I kept running into with audio tools (and what I ended up building)

I’ve been working with audio for a while now like podcast edits, small music experiments, random DSP projects. And honestly, the biggest frustration was never the audio itself… it was the tools.

Most of them fall into two extremes.

Either you get full DAWs like Ableton or Audacity that are powerful but slow to set up and overkill for small tasks. Or you get lightweight web tools that can do one thing, but with almost no control, no preview, and usually some limitation that makes them unusable in real work.

In between those two, there’s almost nothing that feels “just right”.

Things I kept running into:

  • having to install or learn heavy software just to do a simple audio edit

  • no proper real-time preview before exporting

  • tools uploading files to servers for basic processing

  • random format or feature limitations

  • and generally a lack of tools that feel fast and modern

At some point I stopped trying to “find the perfect tool” and just started building one.

That’s how I ended up working on SonicLab — a browser-based audio toolkit that runs fully client-side using the Web Audio API.

The main idea is simple:

do all processing locally in the browser, with no uploads and no accounts

So things like trimming, pitch shifting, slowed + reverb, nightcore, etc. happen instantly on your device.

What I care about most is not just features, but flow — open tool, drop file, preview instantly, export. No setup, no friction.

It’s still early, and I’m improving it step by step based on real use cases I run into myself.

But the direction is clear for me now: audio tools don’t need to be heavy, slow, or cloud-dependent just to do basic useful work.

One thing I found interesting is that the post starts by describing a gap between heavy professional tools and lightweight utilities.

What I'm less certain about is whether those are actually two ends of the same spectrum or two different jobs entirely.

That feels like a surprisingly important distinction for a product like this.
