Today we've reached a whopping 1500 total downloads for @sortql/sortql-cli. Awesome.

This is probably mostly due to some threads that caught traction on Reddit. With this traction, I plan on shipping a few new features and listening closely for any feedback I get.

March 9, 2024 Launched @sortql/sortql-cli npm package!

Launched the initial version of sortQL on npm. This serves as a milestone, as it allows me to easily distribute the package. The focus now lies on promoting it via social media channels (mainly Reddit) and monitoring the package for downloads.

I plan on using this metric to evaluate whether people are interested in the product.

February 1, 2024 Initial Idea

I've been playing around with tools that allow me to automate file sorting workflows. There are some interesting tools out there, but none allowed me to write custom rules in a simple, declarative way.

To achieve this I'm building a tool that leverages the familiarity and power of SQL syntax.

This approach offers a blend of simplicity and flexibility, enabling users to define custom rules for file management tasks without having to dive into complex scripting languages.

Using SQL syntax for file management comes with several benefits:

Learnability: Many people who work with data are already familiar with SQL. By extending SQL's application to file management, the learning curve is significantly reduced.

Precision: SQL's query language allows for precise selection criteria, making it possible to target specific files or groups of files with ease.

Scalability: As the number of files and folders grows, managing them manually becomes impractical. An SQL-based tool can easily scale to handle thousands of files.

Automation: The tool allows for automation of repetitive tasks, such as organizing files into folders based on their type, date, or any other attribute.
