Spreadsheets that come alive as applications

October 17, 2019 Introducing Spreadsheet.com

After a whirlwind two years of development, we're thrilled to share Spreadsheet.com with you today, the 40th anniversary of the spreadsheet.

Spreadsheet.com is a new platform that allows anyone to create solutions for collaborative work, quickly and easily. It's the spreadsheet you already know, with the power of an easy-to-use database and project management system, all with real-time updates and messaging.

We like to think Spreadsheet.com makes spreadsheets come alive as applications. All you need to know is how to use the basics of a spreadsheet. The rest, we hope, is intuitive enough to figure out on your own.

Check out our demo video for a tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00AZ5EVh1jY&t=10s

Congrats, looks really polished! 🙌 How do you differentiate from Coda & Notion?

Thank you! The biggest difference between Spreadsheet.com and other collaboration products is that it's a standards-compliant spreadsheet that works like Google Sheets and Excel Online, but with a whole new set of additional capabilities that also make it an easy to use database and project management system. The demo video illustrates this best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTfWiIK3AdU

Cool, yea I had watched the video, that’s why I asked. Looks similar to Coda, who also have a bunch of integration options including Zapier, are you planning to add ways for your app to talk to other apps?

Got it, yes we plan to have a developer API and pre-built integrations. We currently have Box, DropBox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive integrations for Attachment cells. A Salesforce integration is under development.

Regarding Coda, getting into the weeds a bit here: it has some characteristics of a spreadsheet but is limited in that you can only insert tables in docs, not actual spreadsheets. By this I mean all cells in a column must contain the same type of data, versus a spreadsheet, which allows you to put any kind of data anywhere.

In these tables you cannot reference individual cells and ranges of cells in formulas without a good deal of effort, only rows and columns. This is one of the big differences between Notion, Coda, Airtable, and others that are tables rather than actual spreadsheets like Google Sheets and Excel.

"Coda's formula language abandons cell coordinates and uses the actual objects' names instead." This limits the kinds of things you can build. For example, it would be difficult to build a budget or financial plan without the ability to reference individual cells and ranges in formulas.

Makes a lot of sense, that’s certainly a frustration with the table based approach which I’ve run into - in those tools I build a master table and then create linked views of that table elsewhere. But you’re limited in what information you can access, if You want to pick out one value from that master table and reference it in another table that’s really difficult. I saw you have kanban view, any plans for others? Timeline/gannt is really useful for project management.

Thanks, glad to hear this makes sense. Regarding views: absolutely. Calendar, Gantt, and Form views are on the roadmap.
