SSL Dog
Monitoring SSL endpoints and certificates expiration date
Finally I have added a web form to quickly get informations about a domain's certificate.
Form event are catched by Angular which will launch an https request to an AWS Lambda with POST.
Function will then get host requested and return certificate informations if available.
Example : https://nimb.ws/sAZefC
After fighting with new concepts (Angular, GraphQL, Serverless, ...) I've managed to have a simple POC.
I have now an simple Angular app with :
- Signup page
- Signin page
- Signin, Signup, Signout process with AWS Cognito
- Dashboard page with user's SSL endpoints list table with datas from AWS AppSync (GraphQL + DynamoDB)
I still needs to :
- add possibility to add, update, remove, ... SSL endpoints
- add all the process which will check all users endpoints and notify them if something is wrong
- add option for user to add notification channel (PagerDuty, Slack, Email, ...)
- ...
But I'm proud. I've managed to POC something visual and working.
Now : next !

After a lot of meetings with myself, I decided to move from Django to Angular Framework in top of AWS Lambda API and managed by Amplify. I still don't know if I will use GraphQL for my API or continue with "classic" Lambda.
I've decided to switch from Django (I will still use Python for my AWS Lambda function !) because I want to try to be full serverless, without needing to host my code on a server, even if it's my job :p.
It's a big challenge for me as I'm not very confident with tech like Angular as it's almost new for me.
But it will be a good challenge and a good journey !
Finally I managed to make a choice between several tech for the customer dashboard (where they can manage their endpoints, add, edit, remove, ... them).
After struggling between Firebase + Angular, FireGUI (good no-code platform, check it out !) or Django, I choose Django. Why ? Because I'm more confident with Django and Python dev than with Angular. And FireGUI was too complex to make a PoCfor SSL Dog.
So here it is ! I got a Django project, commited in Github, ready to be dev !

Awaiting my official logo from Fiverr gig, I've added a simple homepage to ssldog.dev.
Nothing special, just a simple page with an optin form (name + email), even if catching emails is not mandatory.
I've added welcome email with Mailchimp too and plugged all that with Thrive Themes.

I finished coding the main function which will check SSL endpoints and return certificate informations like expiration date, days remaining, SAN, issuer, ...
This function is a Lambda function in Python which accept two arguments : host and port. Host is mandatory, port is by default 443.

Several times me and my teammates got SSL errors and websites/apps down because of not renewed certificates. In the company I'm working fulltime we use Pingdom and StatusCake to monitor our applications and websites.
But I found that these tools are too expensive for little projects, so I wanted to create a cheap, simple and resilient app which allow devs, freelancers, your grand mother, ... to monitor endpoints and alert them about their SSL certificates expiration or downtimes.
