Coffee Naming Contest
Upvote your favorite startup-themed coffee names.
Setting up the poll was a ton of fun. I delved deep into #nocoode tools and learned a lot about how to connect Airtable, Softr, Zapier, and Bannerbear together.
From the top ten most upvoted names in the poll, I selected 8 to be the first products in the new store. I sent the names over to the coffee roaster to get proofs set up for the new bags.
After a few long evenings and a VERY long Saturday of tinkering with no-code tools, and then a few hours of debugging with founder friends from my private masterminds, I soft-launched Startup Coffee's naming contest app to Twitter and a few slack channels I participate in.
Everyone who submitted a name idea received a coupon via email when the online store opened for orders.
I wasn't sure how I was going to collect name ideas, but I was sure that I didn't want to spend hours coding something up from scratch. I've got a day job and kids, so ain't nobody got time for that.
No-code to the rescue.
I launched an Airtable, thinking I was going to create a simple form where folks could submit, then vote on name ideas. Turns out, Airtable forms are a bit limited.
So I put out a query on Twitter about better ways to allow voting using an Airtable backend, then went to bed. I woke up the next day to the perfect answer: softr.io
I've been interested in coffee for a long time, but got into it seriously around 2011. After talking to a few entrepreneurs working on B2B SaaS to help coffee roasters run their coffee businesses, I had a hunch I might like to start a coffee brand. Problem was, I had no idea what to name my coffees or how to source them. All I knew for sure was I didn't want to roast my own coffee, as it's quite a capital-intensive business to get off the ground. The naming and source problems could wait for another day, though, as I was concentrating on growing my main business, MastermindJam.
