June 27, 2026 My First SaaS, failure or a big learning?

I shipped StatementFlow (https://statementflow.io) — it turns PDF, scanned, or photographed bank statements into Excel/CSV/QuickBooks/Xero files using AI vision. First, the honest part. When I started I found ~13 direct competitors (DocuClipper, BankStatementConverter, ConvertBankStatement, and a dozen "bank PDF to Excel" clones).

Crowded, right? I almost didn't build it. What changed my mind: nearly all of them are template-based, so they fall apart the moment you give them a scan, a phone photo, or a non-English statement. That's the wedge I went after.

What I think makes it actually different:

• Vision AI reads scans/photos/foreign banks template tools can't

• A deterministic safety net: after extraction it walks the running balance and flags any row whose amount doesn't reconcile — so a misread "8 vs 3" gets caught instead of silently exported. This was the most fun part to build.

• Permanent free tier, credits never expire, and files are never stored (processed in memory, deleted immediately). The incumbents lean on billing traps and expiring credits, so "honest pricing" is itself a wedge.

Stack: Next.js + Claude vision, deployed on Vercel.

Where I'm stuck (would love your take):

The product works. Distribution is the wall. I'm ~2 weeks post-launch and my Search Console reads like a comedy: ~85 impressions, 1 click, domain rating 0. I know that's normal for a newborn domain, but I'd love to hear from people who've cracked SEO for a "tool" product in a crowded niche — did long-tail content or backlinks move the needle faster for you?

Also genuinely curious: if you do your own bookkeeping or taxes, would something like this save you time, or have you already got it solved? Brutal feedback welcome.

Thanks for reading 🙏

The vision AI wedge is the right call template-based tools breaking on scans is a real pain point bookkeepers hit constantly. On distribution, SEO for tool products is a slow burn. The faster path at 2 weeks post-launch is going where bookkeepers and accountants already hang out specific subreddits, Facebook groups, accounting forums. One genuine answer to someone’s ‘how do I convert this bank statement’ question beats 100 impressions on Search Console right now.

The running balance check is the part that really stood out to me. Lots of tools can extract data, but very few try to prove the output is trustworthy. That feels like the kind of detail accountants and bookkeepers would care about far more than which AI model is doing the extraction.

About

StatementFlow started from a simple frustration: getting transactions out of a bank statement and into a spreadsheet is still painful.
