It Started With a Cat

I became a dad recently.

Nothing prepares you for it. Not the books, not the advice, not the YouTube videos at 2am while you're panicking about whether the baby is breathing. None of it.

But there's a moment — and if you're a parent you know exactly what I'm talking about — where everything clicks. Where the exhaustion fades and you're just there, watching this tiny human experience the world for the first time.

For me, that moment was watching my baby discover our cat.

The Look on Her Face

We have a cat. He's been with us for years. He's moody, independent, occasionally affectionate when he wants food. Standard cat behavior.

But to my daughter? He's magic.

The first time she really saw him — not just glanced, but saw him — her entire face changed. Eyes wide. Mouth open. This little hand reaching out, fingers stretching toward fur she'd never touched before. And when he let her touch him, she laughed. Not a polite laugh. A full-body, pure-joy, I-just-discovered-the-best-thing-in-the-universe laugh.

I cried. I'm not going to pretend I didn't.

The Story That Didn't Exist

That night, I wanted to read her a bedtime story about a baby and a cat. Not just any cat. Our cat. I wanted her to see him in a book, to point at the page and recognize him.

I looked everywhere. There are thousands of children's books about cats. None of them were about our cat. None of them had her name. None of them captured what I watched happen that afternoon — this specific, irreplaceable bond between my daughter and her first animal friend.

So the story I wanted to read didn't exist.

And that bothered me.

Building What I Needed

I'm a developer. When something doesn't exist and I need it, I build it.

StoryPals started as a weekend project. The idea was simple: upload a photo of your kid's favorite animal or toy, and let AI generate a personalized, illustrated storybook. Their name. Their companion. Their adventure.

The first story I generated was about my daughter and our cat exploring a garden together. The AI drew him with his exact markings — the white patch on his chest, the slightly crooked tail. When I read it to her, she stared at the illustrations and reached for the screen, trying to pet him.

I knew I was onto something.

It's Not About the Technology

People ask me about the AI, the models, the tech stack. And yeah, that stuff matters. It works. It's impressive.

But that's not why I built this.

I built this because I know what it feels like to hold your child at 3am, exhausted and overwhelmed, and want desperately to give them something beautiful. Something that says: this moment, this bond, this little life you're building — it matters. It's worth capturing.

A personalized storybook isn't just a book. It's proof that someone paid attention. That someone saw what your child loves and turned it into a story just for them.
