February 1, 2022 Building a Community

We started off with our network - given that we were facing this problem, it stood to reason that some of our friends would be to. And we were right! The first 150 beta users were simply people we knew. Beyond that, we started posting online, reaching out to international and expat communities who we knew would be having trouble managing their finances - often they were only too happy to sign up.

Finally, we decided to allocate the final portion of our fundraise towards a crowdfund. This meant that we could not only engage with a new community, but also empower and empassion them with the opportunity to become part of our journey by investing. This fostered a much closer relationship with the early users we collected, and meant that they were more motivated to share the product among their network.

September 1, 2021 Our Process for Building an MVP

At this stage, we were two non-technical founders with no product. So we decided to go the no-code route while we started the hunt for a passionate CTO to manage the product.

Fortunately we were able to build a rudimentary product and validate our idea on Bubble, which we used to raise a small round of funding and secure our superstar CTO, James, who is shepherding the transition to a full code stack.

I'm going down the same path. We are finishing our MVP using Bubble and have plans to move to full code once we reach a handful of milestones. We were able to validate the product with potential customers when it was just a prototype, so we are moving ahead with enough confidence for the next phases. Good luck to all of us!

Exactly what we did! It's certainly the fastest way to validate, although means you're almost starting from scratch when you move to the full product. Happy to chat about our experience or help in any way if I can

March 1, 2021 How We Came Up With The Idea

Strabo was born from more than a decade of using personal finance apps. We've tried pretty much every single one, and still felt that something was missing. We weren't so much interested in looking back over previous spending habits to know when we'd bought too many coffees; it was more about looking forward, to where we wanted to go.

Were we invested in things that matched up to our time horizon and risk profile? How were the various company pensions we'd picked up over the years invested and allocated. Should we buy crypto? Or had the Bitcoin explosion meant we were overallocated. We couldn't easily even find the information required to know the answers to these questions, let alone make the decisions. This was made doubly difficult by the fact that often we were looking for this information across several countries.

To add to this, our co-founder Ben had spent a few years managing private client money in Wealth Management, and was dismayed at both the lack of digital offering, and the growing demand for exactly that from a changing demographic.

From the marriage of these two needs, the first idea for a company emerged.
