January 15, 2025 Launched Streak Calendar: My First Open-Source Project

Hey Indie Hackers! 👋

I'm Ilya, a self-taught web developer, and I just launched my first open-source project, Streak Calendar. It's a productivity app for tracking habits and tasks, built with Next.js. It features multi-day completions, multiple calendars, and a GitHub-style activity grid. The project is still in active development, but I'd love to hear feedback, does it seem like it's on the right track?

Check it out on GitHub: https://github.com/ilyaizen/streak-calendar.

This is also my first post here, and I'm both excited and nervous to share this. The idea came from a personal need to track habits, but it turned into a way to push myself as a developer. I relied heavily on AI tools like Cursor and ChatGPT, which sped things up, but it has me wondering, am I really learning or just generating code I hardly understand? 😅

I also can't help but think about how AI is changing programming. Will it soon be something only top-tier developers do? It's exciting, but it makes me wonder where I fit in as someone still learning.

Hosting has been a challenge too. I'm using Convex and Vercel, but their free tiers feel restrictive. Convex especially doesn't seem to work well even for a hobby project like mine. I'm considering self-hosting and adding Docker support.

Even with the struggles, I've enjoyed the process. Watching an idea turn into something real is incredibly rewarding. Still, I know there's a lot to improve, both in the app and in myself as a developer.

I'd love your input:

* How do you balance learning while using AI tools?

* Any advice for navigating open-source and improving as a self-taught dev?

Thanks for taking the time to read! I'd really appreciate your thoughts! 😊

My son wanted me to quit smoking cigarettes. I figured tracking my habit would help, but nothing out there quite fit what I was looking for. So, naturally, I built my own app!
