Studiolist
Recording Studio Search-Engine for Digital Voiceover Nomads
Here’s what happened in week 11-15 of building Studiolist.org and making it profitable…
Circumstances have changed.
Covid–19 has turned Studiolist.org upside down.
At its core, Studiolist a travel-centric service. You visit the city, find a study, and record. A work-and-travel service for digital voiceover nomads.
People need to travel and work remotely so that Studiolist makes sense.
With the Coronavirus, it no longer makes sense to offer a service like that. I cannot predict how long the global quarantine is going to last (nobody can) but I don’t wanna take the chance, and just sit and wait.
So, I adapted and this is what I did about…
I got sick… and (partly) tired of how the auditions for our theater play were going. The process was horrible (and yes I believe my absence in that one session where the process was decided had an influence on that). These were 4 weeks in which the side-project theater group turned into a full-time unpaid position and where I became „full-time copywriting analyst” for a website (at least for 10 days).
Anyway.
This is what happened in week 7-10 of building Studiolist in 2020:
FYI: Studiolist is the largest search-engine of voiceover recording studios for voiceover artists, audiobook narrators, YouTube creators, and podcasters.
2020 is my last shot to make my 2017-born startup Studiolist profitable* with a „labor budget” of 32h a week and a money budget of 12k EUR (which are all my savings).
*profitable means € 957 / mo, because these are my current fix costs: https://naii.io/2020/costs in an average month.
I’m documenting everything on YouTube (https://naii.io/youtube) and on my blog (https://naii.io/studiolist) with an included newsletter.

It was a week with 4.5 days of being in bed (it was probably about time that I got sick) and 2.5 days of light-weight productivity. In a way, my body did an act of revenge and got back the tranquility time that I was supposed to have during my sabbatical the week before (which I didn’t have).
Anyway.
This is what happened in week 6 of building Studiolist.org in 2020:
FYI: Studiolist is the largest search-engine of voiceover recording studios for voiceover artists, audiobook narrators, YouTube creators, and podcasters.
2020 is my last shot to make my 2017-born startup Studiolist.org profitable* with a „labor budget” of 32h a week and a money budget of 12k EUR (which are all my savings).
*profitable means € 770 / mo, because these are my current fix costs: https://naii.io/2020/costs in an average month.

It was 2 weeks with 7 days of close to no obligations and a week with full obligations that made me sick eventually (that’s why you’re only hearing from me now, but anyway) This is what happened…

Slow down, pause, and breathe.
It’s sabbatical.
Get intentional distance from daily obligations.
- Rest
- Travel
- Project
(pick one)
Every 7th week I take intentional distance from daily obligations.
I want to recharge, prevent burnout/workaholism, and work on other projects, travel, or just enjoy leisure time.
For 7 days I live from day to day. My goal with taking sabbaticals is to work not more than 180 business days per year.

It was a week with lots of thinking, admin work, and things I didn’t plan to do but still got stuff done for Studiolist, here it is…

The week felt too short with almost 20 hours of working for the theater group (part-time job?) and in the name of frustrations with tech but still, this is what I worked on and finished…
Week 2: I HATE TECHNOLOGY (but I also love it) - Building Studiolist

From lower back pain to mental pain… it was all part of this week.
I was sitting too much, basically glued to the chair. And the pain in the head was caused by too many thoughts. It was not real physical pain but the other kind of pain, you know.
But I got stuff done for Studiolist, here it is: https://youtu.be/Yobk0nH87hs

I didn’t really plan to work on the logo today but I did it anyway.
Inspired by having watched some of the Kurzgesagt videos (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_8yK2kmxoo) today and generally speaking by Nomad List, Nomad Cruise, and Kurzgesagt.
I love their design language and using a strong design can be the main differentiator from my competition.
I want the logo to be playful without losing its seriousness, and a retro touch.

Here’s what you can expect from me (and what I expect from myself) in 2020 on Indie Hackers…
With Studiolist, my 2017-born startup, I’m on my way to building the largest search-engine of voiceover recording studios for voiceover artists.
2020 is also my last shot to make it profitable* with a „labor budget” of 20 hours a week and a money budget of 12k EUR (which are all my savings).
*profitable means € 667 / mo, because these are my current fix costs in an average month, see: https://naii.io/2020/costs
I’m prepared for failure and zero money in the bank by the end of 2020. I don’t have a plan B.
I’m documenting everything here on IH as well as on YT: https://naii.io/youtube and Substack: https://naii.io/studiolist (blog and newsletter).
This post is for accountability purposes and so that I remember on Dec 31, 2020, or any time of the year with what mission I had started the year.
I hope you’ll have successful 52 weeks!

I want to empower voiceover artists to work in top-rated studios while traveling to awesome cities that nourish their creative output and make them connect to the world. And studio owners fill empty studio time.
