October 10, 2025 How My Wife Inspired Me to Build Stylegenai — My Solo Founder Journey

I’m a solo founder and developer, and Stylegenai started with something as simple as watching my wife get ready.

Every morning, she’d stand in front of the closet, trying to decide what to wear. It would take forever — trying on clothes, matching colors, checking the weather. One day I thought:

“Why can’t an app just do this for us?”

That’s where the idea for Stylegenai was born — an app that helps people get dressed easier by using AI to generate outfits from their own wardrobe.

From Idea to Product

Stylegenai lets you upload your clothes, and the app generates hundreds of outfit combinations — either randomly for inspiration or through prompts like “show me a cozy dinner outfit”.

You can also schedule your looks on a calendar and track your closet statistics — so you finally know what you actually wear most often. The goal is simple: to solve the “what to wear” problem for everyone.

Building It Solo

I built everything myself — backend, frontend, AI integrations — using Django REST Framework, Expo React Native, OpenAI API, and a custom LLM model.

The hardest challenge by far was building the outfit suggestion algorithm. It had to understand colors, seasons, styles, and context, and still produce natural, creative combinations — something even humans struggle with sometimes.

But once I saw the first AI-generated outfits using real clothes from my own closet, it was all worth it.

The Launch

After months of building, debugging, and tweaking, I finally launched Stylegenai on iOS, Android, and the web.

It wasn’t perfect — in fact, I launched earlier than I felt ready. But that turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. Real user feedback helped me shape the product far better than waiting for “perfect.”

What’s Next

My short-term goal is to reach three figures in monthly revenue.

I’m currently working on a smart shopping feature that helps users find missing pieces in their closet and even suggests what to buy next — plus, a virtual try-on tool to visualize outfits before buying or wearing them.

What I Learned

Before Stylegenai, I had never built and shipped a full app from scratch. Along the way, I learned how to:

  • set up and manage a backend server,

  • integrate authentication and notifications,

  • deploy to app stores, and

  • handle the endless debugging that comes with solo development.

It’s been both painful and deeply satisfying.

My Advice to Other Indie Hackers

If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this:

Launch as soon as possible. Don’t wait for perfect.

You’ll never feel completely ready, but every user interaction will teach you something new — and those lessons are far more valuable than endless polishing.

Thanks for reading my story.
If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet thinking “I have nothing to wear,” Stylegenai might just save you a few minutes (and arguments). 👕✨
