April 14, 2021 Classical music: support for Bhatkhande notation

North Indian classical music (also called Hindustani music) is engraved with a system known as Bhatkhande notation which displays the Svara notation along with the beat / Taal.

SvaraCollective now supports creation of notations in Bhatkhande format. One of the first videos I transcribed was a Sitar concert from the Darbar festival https://svaracollective.com/bandish/yaman_sitar_chota_khayal

This should make it easier for students of classical music to learn traditional compositions as well.

December 6, 2019 Youtube - Time synced notations

One of the challenges when reading a notation sheet is that it appears to be a 'wall of text'. If you look up from your instrument at the notations, you've lost the point where you were practicing.

The modern alternative supported by platforms such as Soundslice, flat.io and Noteflight, is that a moving cursor will indicate where the current note is.

The same idea has been implemented here and the notes will be in time sync with the Youtube, which is indicated with a vertical cursor that scrolls across the (Hindi/Devanagari) script notations.

The second song that went live was this evocative number by Arijit Singh https://svaracollective.com/songs/kabhi_jo_badal_barse

November 17, 2019 Site is live

Based on a Clojurescript application and using the Netlify platform as a static site deployment tool, the first version of the site went live.
It enables a music student to view the notation in Hindi, with an automated layout mechanism that spaces out the notes/Svaras based on the time between notes.

The first song that I transcribed is a personal favourite, a composition by the titans of yesteryear, Shankar-Jaikishan. 'Ye Raatein Ye Mausam' https://svaracollective.com/songs/hindi/ye_raatein_ye_mausam

March 2018 Hit upon the idea

Platforms such as flat.io, soundslice.com & noteflight.com enable an interactive & extremely useful tool for music enthusiasts who can read (western classical) sheet music. It occurred to me that a similar tool for South Asian music would encourage similar enthusiasts to read, learn & share music, especially instrumental compositions .
Currently the best "format" for sharing Sargam notations is usually youtube videos or images of handwritten notes, and I felt that it should be possible to improve on that.

There exist a few challenges, but that's for another post.
