May 11, 2026 I built a Chrome tab suspender after The Great Suspender got infected with malware — here's what I learned

A few weeks ago I was frustrated with Chrome eating 6GB of RAM

with 40+ tabs open.

Every existing tab suspender had a problem:

- The Great Suspender: got acquired, injected malware,

removed from Chrome Web Store

- Others: ads, telemetry, or abandoned

So I built Tab Hibernator Pro from scratch.

THE TECHNICAL DECISIONS I MADE:

1. Zero external calls — not a single network request.

Every existing suspender phoned home. Mine doesn't.

2. chrome.alarms over setInterval — MV3 service workers

go to sleep. Most suspenders break because of this.

Alarms persist through sleep.

3. Smart exclusions — never suspends audio tabs, tabs with

unsaved form content, pinned tabs, or your active tab.

4. All storage local — chrome.storage.local only.

Nothing leaves your device.

THE NUMBERS SO FAR:

- Just launched today

- 0 users (being honest)

- $0 revenue

THE MONETIZATION PLAN:

- Free forever for core features

- Ko-fi donations for now

- Freemium Pro tier once I hit 500 users

(sync across devices, per-site rules, session backup)

WHAT I WANT FROM INDIEHACKERS:

Honest feedback on the monetization approach.

Is freemium the right model for a utility extension?

Would you pay for a Pro tier?

Happy to answer any technical questions about MV3

or the chrome.alarms approach.
