July 15, 2026 Why I built a pay-as-you-go AI tool (and why SaaS subscription models are tiring casual users)

Hey Indie Hackers,

Like many of you, I have major subscription fatigue. It feels like every new software or AI tool requires a $29/month plan.

A few weeks ago, I needed to make a quick talking-avatar video ad for a project. I looked at the industry leaders (HeyGen, D-ID, Synthesia). The quality was great, but the pricing model rubbed me the wrong way. I had to commit to a monthly subscription, get a bucket of credits, and if I didn't use them by the end of the month, they’d vanish.

For low-volume or seasonal creators, this pricing model feels like renting a whole truck to carry one small box.

So, I decided to build a pay-as-you-go alternative: [TalkPix](https://www.talkpix.ai).

### The Business Model: Credits That Never Expire

Instead of recurring monthly bills, we charge a one-time fee for credit packs.

- 1 credit equals roughly 1 second of rendered HD video.

- The credits sit in your wallet forever until you actually use them.

- To reduce friction, we built a free 3-second preview on [TalkPix Create](https://www.talkpix.ai/create). Users can test their photo and voice matches without spending any credits.

### The Tech Stack

We kept the stack light, modular, and server-side secure:

- Framework: Next.js 14 (App Router) + TypeScript

- Styling: Tailwind CSS (configured for a dark premium UI)

- Database & Auth: Supabase (using Postgres with RLS policies and magic links for auth)

- Storage: Cloudflare R2 (S3-compatible, short-lived presigned URLs for upload security)

- AI Engine: Replicate API running the audio-to-video lip-sync models

- Payments: Stripe Checkout (one-time credit packages)

### The Launch Goal

We just pushed our first stable build and launched our backlink campaign. Our main goal right now is finding out if casual creators and e-commerce sellers actually prefer pay-as-you-go models, or if the predictable recurring revenue of subscriptions is simply too dominant for SaaS builders to ignore.

I'd love to hear your thoughts:

1. Do you think pay-as-you-go models can compete with SaaS subscriptions in terms of user acquisition?

2. Any feedback on our landing page/generator UX?

Check it out here: [TalkPix.ai](https://www.talkpix.ai)

Cheers,

Ege
