I built 100+ free browser tools. 8.5k impressions, 33 clicks. What am I missing?

Over the past months I've been building Tapwerk (tapwerk.app) — a collection of 100+ browser-based tools (PDF, image, audio, text utilities, converters, etc). Everything runs client-side or through a lightweight backend, no bloat, fast load times.

Technical SEO side is solid: individual pages per tool, sitemap, indexed in Search Console, translated into DE/FR/ES/PT.

But the last 28 days tell a rough story:

~8,550 impressions

33 clicks

Average position: ~70

Some tools get real search volume — one page has 600+ impressions for exact-match queries — but sits at position 77. Basically invisible past page 6.

My best guess: technical SEO isn't the bottleneck anymore, domain authority is. New domain, ~400 pages, almost no backlinks yet.

So — for people who've grown a tools/utility site from zero:

What actually moved the needle for you — backlinks, content, something else entirely?

Did you consolidate similar tool pages or keep them separate per use case?

Any directories/launches that were worth the time vs. ones that weren't?

Happy to share more numbers if useful. Building in public and trying to actually learn from this rather than just guessing.

I kept finding myself needing quick, one-off tools — compress a PDF, convert a file, count words — and either had to install bloated software or wade through ad-infested sites with sketchy uploads. So I started building single tools for myself, then realized the pattern scales: browser-based, no installs, no server-side file storage where avoidable.

It grew into 100+ tools because every time I needed something new, I just added it. At this point it's less "one product idea" and more "the toolbox I wish existed" — and apparently other people run into the same annoying gaps I did.
