March 8, 2019 Grab all the Social Media Names Too

It's no longer enough to get the domain name for you organization. Now, you need to grab the Twitter, GitHub, Medium and (dare I say it) IndieHacker nicknames appropriate for your company.

Technically you can file a complaint against someone squatting on your name or take them to court, but that could be time-consuming.

Now there's an idea...a service that checks all the social media for you! I'll have to post that in the free ideas section, 'cause I would definitely use that if it existed.

March 8, 2019 Consider Using Medium as Corporate Web Site

After some research, I've found that the new shiny is to use Medium as your corporate web site. This gives you a major jump start in terms of Google respectability. I'm still trying to figure out how to do this elegantly, but another advantage is that it's free hosting and one less server to worry about.

I'm still concerned about being limited in terms of formatting, but there's no reason why I can't have other content elsewhere.

My big question to be frank... WHY?

I thought they killed custom domains, so would you be able to point your domain there? Unless your corp site isn't your own domain...?

I'm soo confused. Who else does this and where have you heard this is a thing?

Agree with others, that you need total control as your corp site is a massive asset.

I can see people doing their blog there, but I strongly advise against it as you do want control and the SEO juice flowing back to your domain.

The trend seems to be people moving away from it as the source. https://baremetrics.com/blog/medium-back-to-blog

I feel like the best use case for Medium is to "republish" your great content there but marked as canonical back to your post on your site. This way you can tap an audience.

I'm not trying to be rude but this is the worst idea I've heard in a while and the first time I hear someone considering this :). Maybe what you're trying to say is that your corporate BLOG will run on Medium, but the corporate website? You will have no control over the design, no measuring tools, you will not be able to control the UX, no custom domain, no SEO and many more. A corporate website is really (like REALLY REALLY!) important and companies are paying tons of money to optimize their websites and make their funnel work. I can't even imagine how a website "hosted" on Medium will look like. So, a big NO-NO!

I understand and agree with your comment, honestly. It's possible that the VC was either pulling my leg or picking stuff out of her ahem derriere to toss at me...

I've heard from a few VC's that this is how their startups are getting a jumpstart on Google rank. Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out how to make it work and whether it's good for my purposes.

I suppose if you're just starting out, you don't really have any "SEO juice" to capitalize on.

I've seen a few startups launch with Facebook pages as their corporate web site. I'm trying to scope out whether there's a way to use Twitter or Instagram as a launch point.

I'm certainly planning to have my own publication on Medium but to also have selected technical articles published under other publications. They will all still link back to my name but it separates technical credibility from pure brand-related.

For example, Touchgram is going to be one of the most complex iMessage apps ever created. So I have material for several technical articles about writing for iMessage, as well as a more general one about iMessage privacy from developers.

I'm also writing an article about using Supernova Studio as I've been a very heavy user.

These will get much wider readership if I can get them into publications such as uxplanet.

Quite a novel idea, can you share some examples of corporates going exclusively Medium for their web presence? I'm interested to see their approach :-)

Did you ever try using wordpress ? I think medium is great, but my blog is my asset, which I want to have full control.

You can using medium as content distribution or writing different topic from your main blog. I write about my business on my blog (natagon.com) which using wordpress as CMS,and using medium to write different topic from my main blog.

March 8, 2019 Bank Representatives are not Tech Savvy

I want to set up the web site such that clients can pay on the web via Apple Pay. My bank's merchant services folk had no clue how to help me. They kept telling me that I would need to get a merchant terminal .

I'm now looking into just using Stripe and their API.
