Just curious, are you seeing traction for your Slack app? Can imagine this being useful to research teams.

    1. 2

We expected more traction to be honest based on the lack of competition. However, we haven't launched it yet. There is also a key element missing in our Slack onboarding, which should drive adoption. We'll release it next week.

September 16, 2020 Teams are in Beta!

We are stoked to announce that our Tefter for Teams offering has entered a beta testing phase 🎉.

Our journey ⛵️ to enable team collaboration in Tefter started with the Slack app. But we didn't stop there, the next step was to bring collaboration to the Web with all the functionality to manage teams and their bookmarks through tefter.io. We then implemented a permissions system, revisited public teams and overhauled our browser extension Omni, to make room for teams.

Omni
It has been revamped to integrate teams. Install it now:

• Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/omni-tabs-history-and-boo/eldofalegbgagpenjjcapjaogpioldoh
• Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tefter/

You can switch between teams and your personal workspace with ctrl + h and ctrl + l as well as with alt + n where n is the number of the team to switch to. To surface the aliases view, hit alt + a.

With the latest version of Omni you can:

• Add a bookmark to a team
• Add a bookmark to a list belonging to a team
• List the top bookmarks of a team
• Search a team's bookmarks
• Search and resolve team's aliases (think alt + a)

Beta
We need more people to try Tefter for Teams to iron out any issues, further validate our product ideas and make any necessary tweaks based on your feedback.

To create a team, head over to https://tefter.io/teams/free-trial and enjoy a free 28 day trial.

Join and treat yourself to ⚡️instant access ⚡️to an abundance of curated relevant links and aliases.

Having Omni installed you can can use the /go command to navigate to an alias. For example you can type /go gems/rails to search for the Rails gem on rubygems.org.

📣 Finally, remember that open-source teams are free. If you represent such an organization create a team and let us know at support@tefter.io.

May 25, 2020 Launched Omni - A tabs, history and bookmarks tool

We've launched Omni, the new Tefter browser extension that lets you search and navigate your open tabs, history and Tefter bookmarks. It also automatically groups together similar links.

We usually have many tabs open, it hurts productivity and increases stress. After a certain number of tabs, their titles are not even visible. Most of us switch between tabs, helplessly guessing by the favicons, hundreds of times a day. When it comes to history, trying to find a page from let's say last week, the browsers make it almost impossible. Think about it, Google with their Chrome browser has interest in you blindly "googling" stuff instead of really helping you. Firefox would want you to bookmark everything on Pocket, which shows ads and you may even end up buying a subscription there.

Omni is the fastest tab and history search tool out there. It's free, never shows ads and won't sell your data. All your data stays local and is optimally indexed. It's tailored for users who prefer keyboard-driven interactions. It analyzes your history and tab switching behavior and the more you use it the better the search results you see.

We truly believe it can change the way we surf the web and this is only the beginning.

To install

Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tefter/eldofalegbgagpenjjcapjaogpioldoh

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/tefter/

We'd love to get some feedback from you. Please comment and upvote!

April 11, 2020 Dropped free-tier

One of our key values at Tefter is honesty. We started with the simple promise that we will never show ads or sell user data to third-parties. We intend to keep that promise.

As of last week there is no free plan. Our hobbyist plan is offered for 9$ per year. We consider this a fair price to pay to use our service. If you cannot afford that amount, or use Tefter as part of open-source / philanthropic / community work, let us know and we will consider waiving the subscription cost.

The rationale behind this decision is twofold. We noticed that our paying users offered more valuable feedback while contributing towards our maintenance costs at the same time. On the other hand, with the amount of our daily signups, we had to reserve more and more time for moderation.

Think about it, we do our best to defend the attention span of users. What about us though? We are a couple of founders who wish to keep their sanity. Tefter is is intentionally self-funded and its founders are not billionaires. If you're happy with the product, you should be willing to pay for it.

After all, it's the classic "If You're Not Paying For It, You Become The Product". We don't want that, users deserve better.

I have not used Tefter but i can tell you that I employed the same strategy some months back on an asset and sales went up. If they need it, they will pay for it.

Well you should try Tefter! We might no longer have a free-tier but theres a 14 days trial. In any case I find that people are slowly becoming more and more suspicious of "free" products, so fingers crossed our sales will go up too!

March 22, 2020 Released a command-line app

It's true, you may now use Tefter from the terminal!

Here's a taste https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CA-aIiJ4luA

To install it run:

brew tap tefter/homebrew-cli
brew install tefter

Did we mention that the app is open-source as well? Have a look at the source 👉 https://github.com/tefter/cli

We started working on this, after a discussion on what would it take for us to use Tefter even more. We're terminal geeks, so the answer was clear, a command-line app, so we won't have to leave the terminal.

Despite it not being a priority based on our roadmap, it was a really fun weekend project with so many challenges.

The app is written in Elixir and there aren't many open-source interactive command-line apps in that language. We are big supporters of Elixir though. We use it in a couple services in the backend and we couldn't be happier about its stability and ease of development it provides.

What did we learn? Well, packaging and distributing software for a variety of systems is hard.

If you're tech minded like us, you may enjoy reading this post
which covers the implementation journey in more detail, here https://zorbash.com/post/building-command-line-applications-with-elixir/

Our goal is to make Tefter available in every major platform and environment users feel comfortable with. We provide a web, desktop, mobile and now a command-line app. What's your environment of choice? What are your bookmarking habits? What do you use at work? Let us know!

February 9, 2020 Built a Web UI for Organizations

Before today's release, users would interact with organizations primarily through Slack.

All our team collaboration features (see: https://guides.tefter.io/features/team_collaboration/)
to add bookmarks, create aliases and whatnot were usable only through Slack.

Now there's a workspace switcher element in the account dropdown. A user can keep a tab open to work on their org bookmarks and another one for their personal ones.

There's also a brand new way to invite members to your organization. You can select any of the users of the Slack workspace associated with your organization and invite them to collaborate on Tefter. You can read more about this 👉
https://guides.tefter.io/getting-started/organizations/#inviting-members

Well, we didn't stop there! There's more, now you can also create lists within an organization and any members may add bookmarks.

We're working hard to improve the usability of our most used features. For the complete changelog, read https://headwayapp.co/tefter-changelog/organization-improvements-136905

Hey Dimitris, check out weavy.com if you're thinking about adding more team collaboration features.

November 18, 2019 We used a GitHub repo to build a feature showcase

We created a GitHub repo https://github.com/tefter/tefter to map and demonstrate some of our most important features to date at https://tefter.io

It was quite a relief. After countless discussions, struggling to find the perfect design for our landing page that does justice to our features, we decided to go ahead with a simple markdown page.

We're building Tefter, not to be the next unicorn startup, but to bring real value to people like us. Our user-base has a tech mindset , so they wouldn't mind some markdown. There are so many things Tefter does that went undocumented and unannounced.

Maybe we were shy, or embarrassed, thinking that the UX of some features is not flawless or unpolished. Our core product is free and compares well against any of our competitors. We are proud of what we've built.

Our stance against ads, spam, noise is clear and our promise is that we don't sell or harvest user data. We hope users will forgive some sharp edges, try our product and provide feedback so that we can make it even better.

October 23, 2019 Released Organizations

Users can now collaborate within a Slack workspace.
They can use the /tefter command to add bookmarks, create aliases and search.

We've been working on this feature the last months, testing it in some workspaces and experimenting with different use cases.

Within an organization, bookmarks are an integral part of sharing knowledge. In some occasions, one might search for "python authentication", to access the bookmarked libraries deemed useful by the company. More frequently people ask "What's the link for the API documentation of microservice x". That's how we came up with aliases. While we provide full-text search and calling
/tefter search api microservice x might be enough, aliases make this even easier. A team member will create an alias using
/tefter alias docs-api-x and next time somebody asks, some team member will call /tefter docs-api-x for the link to appear in the channel.

In the end, the organization will come up with some naming patterns, so all aliases for documentation might start with "docs-".

Organizations are free, for up to 5 seats. Seats are reserved for users who can add new content. However even in the free plan, every user of the workspace can search and resolve aliases. For teams in need of more collaborators, there are paid plans available here https://tefter.io/teams-pricing-plans

We've made the commitment to keep it free for open-source communities. Do you represent such a community? Don't hesitate to reach out to us on Twitter.
