November 19, 2025 Spent $540/year on writing tools. Built my own for $7.99/mo. Here's what I learned.

Solo dev here. Just launched TextSmithPro after 4 months of building.

The Frustration:

Ever find yourself paying for tools you barely use together? That was me with writing software.

I had QuillBot for paraphrasing, Grammarly catching my typos, random plagiarism checkers, and DeepL for translations. Each one worked fine alone, but using them together? Copy-paste hell.

Write in Google Docs → Copy to QuillBot → Back to Docs → Copy to Grammarly → Export for plagiarism check → Repeat.

And I was dropping ~$540/year on this mess. Not because each tool was expensive, but because I needed ALL of them. 🤦

Market Research:

- 45M students in US alone

- Average student budget: <$100/mo for everything

- Writing tools market: $4B+ annually

- Average price: $10-15/mo per tool

The Gap:

Students need these tools most, can afford them least.

The Solution:

TextSmithPro combines:

Questions for IH:

1. Should I add team features first or mobile app?

2. Best channels to reach students?

3. When to raise prices?
