thatwas.pro

Over the last year, I was building a website for Rainbow 6 streamers. It allowed people to upload clips, the community would vote, and it would automatically create a montage of the top clips.

I thought it would be a great way for smaller streamers to be discovered by a wider audience. For a variety of reasons, I have shelved this plan for now. What I did notice though - a lot of people were worried about submitting content anywhere, as they felt people may steal it for their own gain.

Introducting the new ✨That Was .Pro✨

Once you connect your Twitch/YouTube account, you can choose to have a short introduction and/or watermark on your clip, showing your Twitch/YouTube link and picture. Alternatively you can enter your details manually.

After posting a list of things that I felt were holding me back and causing some stress, I put on my big boy boots and edited the landing page to show that voting will be open soon, and made my first post to social media. Not expecting a landfall of users obviously, but a few signups would be great to kick things off!

While there are some fairly basic features I will continue to add and work on, the main features are now complete:
∙ Users can sign up
∙ Users can upload videos in this week's batch
∙ Users can vote on the videos from the previous week's batch
∙ Top 10 videos will automagically be stitched together
∙ Site looks pleasing enough

I have been messaging people on Reddit to invite them to become beta users. My process is to look on the r/rainbow6 subreddit, search by gameplay clips, and if something is of a similar quality to what I am looking for, I go to that user's post history. If they regularly upload clips, and don't seem to be the kind of person that leaves toxic comments all over the internet, I will reach out to them to see if they are interested.

For the the message I have been sending, I will be sharing it on indiehackers to try and get feedback on ways to improve this script - I'm worried it is coming off a bit spammy.

On holiday, in remote Australia, relaxing in a campervan. What a great opportunity to let the mind wonder and come up with ideas 🧠.

Idea prompt 1:
My gaming group regularly uploads short gameplay clips of Rainbow 6 Siege to reddit. We then send the link to each other, maybe someone comments or likes it, but it ultimately dissapears at this point.

Idea prompt 2:
While I don't watch streamers live-stream, I do watch their highlight reels on youtube. Mainly for playing the game in different ways, which I then incorporate into my own play style.

Solution:
Personally, I don't regularly have enough great clips to make my own youtube channel. However, there are a huge number of people in the Rainbow 6 Siege community in this same position. I have decided I will create a platform where people can upload their best clips of the week, the community then votes on these in the subsequent week, and this gets stitched together into a highlight reel and uploaded to youtube. My income source will be the youtube channel being monetised.
