The Bootstrapped Founder
A blog about how to start, run, and sell a bootstrapped SaaS
A few months ago, I had the idea that I wanted to write an audience-first book about the audience-first approach to building a business.
I wrote my previous book, Zero to Sold, in a very reader-centric way, releasing individual chapters every week. I worked a lot with reader feedback from the blog, but I didn't have any particular system in place to get feedback on the book.
So this time around, there will be a system. I will have a number of alpha reader batches who will get access to very early drafts of the book, and once there is something that resembles a manuscript, beta readers will get to see the book in its almost-finished state.
Audience First will be about... what you want it to be about, kind of. Of course, the main theme will be everything to do with audiences and the audience-first approach to building businesses. But the particular details? Completely up to my audience.
So far, the chapters in the book will be about:
- What "audience" means, and what "audience-first" is all about
- How to find an audience to serve
- How to analyze and compare audiences
- How to build a following for your business (which is often called "building an audience")
- How to become a subject matter expert and a member of your audience's tribal niche community
- and many more
I've already collected a number of suggestions on a public content list. Interested readers have been using the email form on that page to send their questions over. It has been amazingly successful. Already, a number of new questions that I hadn't thought about are part of the journey of the book.
And that's what I wanted to happen in the first place. Immediate collaboration, from day one. Which was yesterday, when I tweeted about this. I'm enjoying this process immensely.
If you're interested in being a part of this journey as well, please check out the Audience First homepage. If anything can be improved, reach out. Everything along the way is supposed to be audience-first. And Indie Hackers are my audience. Because it's an awesome audience that I want to help and empower for a long time.
As incredible as this sounds, I have apparently sold 2003 books over the last 60 days. Two months ago, I released my book Zero to Sold through Twitter (and a day later, ProductHunt), and it was met with an unexpected but most welcome response from the community.
On day one, I sold 350 copies.
Within the first week, I sold 1000 copies.
Now, two months in, I have sold 2000 copies.
It's beyond my wildest expectations, and I could not be happier.
I have shared all the details in a Twitter thread, but let me boil it down here:
As of right now, I sold 2003 copies of Zero to Sold and made $16,385 in revenue.
- Amazon: 1449 books, $10,371.10
- Gumroad: 512 books, $5,754.86
- Draft2Digital: 42 books, $259.04
- IngramSpark: 37 books, $198.50
Total: 2003 books, $16,385.00 revenue
If you're interested in the full story of how I wrote and self-published the book, you can learn more on my blog and on my podcast.
If you have any questions about the journey, please let me know here! I am SO excited :D

I signed up for your newsletter and am enjoying reading through the blog. I'll be buying the book next!
If you had to name one thing that you think has been most instrumental in the book's sales, what would be?
-
2
This community, hands down. If I hadn't written "for free" for over half a year and gathered a group of people around me who are interested in what I do, this would have gone nowhere as smooth. It also gave me great insights into what my readers would like to read about.
-
1
Do you have any tips you can share on finding or creating a community for a product/service on Facebook (or any other platform)?
-
2
There is likely already something on Facebook. Many tribes have long-established communities on Facebook, with clear hierarchies and structure. Try finding those by asking people who are your best kind of potential customers for the groups that they are in. Join those groups, and OBSERVE. Don't advertise, don't "build an audience", just listen and read for a while. Then, engage in discussions, and try giving valuable information for free. Make it clear that you're an expert, and make it equally clear that you're there for the long run. That way, you will embed yourself into that community, and you can eventually start talking about your thing in the context of someone else's problem.
This works for any platform. Give more than you take, understand that this isn't hackable, it takes time and consistent effort.

Congrats, Arvid. Listened to your podcast interview with Bruno, recently. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
I'm soon to self-publish my book (about community building). I'm about halfway through writing, and starting to turn my mind to how to sell and distribute it.
Is there any particular strategy you used when publishing across more than one platform. I've been thinking that I should go with either Gumroad or Amazon, but it seems that you can benefit from being in more than one place, if done right?
-
1
The risk is that you alienate people if you only choose one platform. If you pick Amazon only, you alienate the people who don't want to (or can't) buy from Amazon, either due to ethical concerns or because they live in countries where Amazon is not present as much. If you pick Gumroad only, you alienate people who have a Kindle and want to keep all their books in their Amazon Kindle library.
By supporting both (and a few more) platforms, you will de-risk your distribution channels. You can still heavily market only ONE channel but have the other available for the people who need an alternative.
You can read more about my whole publishing journey here:

It's quite incredible. Ever since I've went all in and published my book Zero to Sold, my newsletter numbers have been climbing so much faster than ever before.
This week, I have reached 2500 subscribers.
Here is the growth chart. The Bootstrapped Founder Newsletter is at 2549 subs, with a 49.1% opening rate and 11.71% clicks (which might seem low, but I barely have any links in the newsletter itself. It's almost all content).
It's wonderful to see that every week, only a handful of people unsubscribe. Five people out of 2500? Sounds like the rest of them really enjoy my content.
I have also started to add links to non-bootstrapped stuff into my newsletters. In today's episode, there are links about Cheesemaking, Starlink, and the first signs of domesticated cats. I'm adding those things because a) they're actually super interesting and b) because I can! I love learning seemingly random yet intrinsically interesting facts. So I'm passing it on.
Anyway! Next big milestone will be 3000.
Thank you, everyone, for reading my milestones, and particularly those of you who read my newsletter every week. It is most appreciated!
You can find the latest episode here, and you can subscribe from there as well, of course.

Since I launched my book Zero to Sold ten days ago, my blog visits and, subsequently, my newsletter signups have skyrocketed.
Before that day, I created a milestone every 100 new subscribers. Well, turns out I missed a few. Before the launch, I had just reached 1500 subscribers. The launch added over 700 new subscribers to the list, which is almost 50% growth in one week.
I am blown away.
Here are the stats: 2265 subscribers, 50%+ open rates
Of course, I will continue things just like I was before. It's just an amazing and frankly unexpected experience.

It has been exactly 7 days since I launched my book Zero to Sold. I launched it to my audience on Twitter last Monday, and I've been tracking and sharing sales metrics for every day in the main launch Tweet.
Here is a quick look at the numbers!
- Books sold so far: 1004+ Books (changes every few minutes!)
- Overall revenue for Zero to Sold so far: ~$8443,26+
These are my sales, by channel, at around 1000 books sold:
-
Amazon: ~$4,328.89
-
Gumroad: $3772.58
-
Draft2Digital: $109.39
-
Amazon Affiliate: ~$232,80
-
All combined = ~ $8443,26
I have written an article about all the sales, revenue, and engagement metrics..
Please check it out!

Congrats Arvid! Well deserved! :)
The launch of my book Zero to Sold has been incredible.
Yesterday, at 2 pm CET, I launched the book on Twitter. The tweet got incredible engagement: within 28 hours, it stands at 137 Retweets and 769 Likes, with 98 comments. The reach of this tweet has been spectacular: it reports over 100.000 impressions.
For a book launch, that isn't too shabby.
I engaged with everyone who engaged with that Tweet. Took most of my time yesterday. Here are the sales results of the launch.
- 199 units sold on Amazon (Kindle only, as Paperbacks only start counting when they're shipped)
- 148 units sold on Gumroad (Mostly from non-Amazon countries like Russia)
That's at least 347 sales. Plus the paperbacks which I expect number somewhere between 50 and 100 orders.
With me making anywhere between $3 and $9 on royalties, depending on the country and format, I'm looking at something between $1000 and $3000 in royalties from the first 24h of launching my book.
I could not have dreamed that. In fact, I assumed that I might sell 50 copies, maybe.
Having both the Kindle and the Print-on-Demand book on Amazon from the start resulted in this little gem that I would have never expected: right now, Zero to Sold is the #1 Amazon Bestseller in the Small Business category.

I am still in shocked disbelief. I never expected this to happen, not for months or years.
Earlier today, right at 00:05 PST, I launched on Product Hunt through PH's automatic scheduling. When I woke up 40 minutes later, it was 9:45 here in Germany. I tweeted about the launch, and the 6 votes it already had gathered turned into 29, catapulting me to the top spot. The book has been in the #1 spot ever since.
Other side-effects appeared on my blog. The blog itself received 5000+ visits, many of which hung around and checked out other articles and pages. One of those was my newsletter. In the 24h sale period, my newsletter grew by 8%, adding 108 new newsletter subscribers.
What can I say, I'm still in a daze. So much love, so much support, so much kindness has been expressed to me over the last 24 hours, of which I slept only 4.
I am so glad to have found the Indie Hackers community. This wouldn't have happened without every single one of you.
Now, I'll get back to chatting with people on Twitter. The ProductHunt situation is still happening :D
If you're interested in the book, please check out Zero to Sold.

Thanks, Rob. Thanks as well, again, for helping me figure out the finer details of self-publishing. I'll pay it forward!
-
-
2
Congratulations, I got the book after reading a few pages of the sample on Kindle. Easy to read, very interesting. I didn't read everything yet, but I think it applies to an IndieHacker in the early stages way better than some high level Facebook, Airbnb, etc story.
-
1
Thank you. I agree, there is something to the indie hacker journey that is fundamentally different than what any hypergrowth startup manual could ever provide. I mean, everyone has to be scrappy and resourceful in their businesses, no matter how well they're funded. But there is much more personal risk in indie businesses that don't have their assets invested in diversified ways. So particularly in the early stage of ideation and validating audience, problem, and solution, you can't gamble as much as you could with VC money on your bank account.
That's why I wanted to write the book, and I am so happy you see it being useful for this purpose.
-
2
Yeah, especially the advice of today's big successes is extremely distorted. They have a long journey behind them and don't remember correctly what they did or "romanticize" things.
I recently read on Twitter a reply by Basecamp to the question how they validated their new app Hey. And the reply was to just build and release it - that's how you test a market.
Also I read that their marketing is very good, etc. But looking at their followers on Twitter alone -> Over half a million. One tweet and that's all the marketing they need to do. Whatever they have to say, most things would never be very actionable for like 99% of the people.
-
1
Yeah, distorted is the right word. I'm also not completely safe from that, but I try to check my perspective whenever I notice that I am assuming something. And actively mentoring a handful of people keeps me synced with their early-stage reality. Which I really appreciate.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have 500,000k followers and throw products at them. That's probably lots of fun. But it's neither the goal nor the reality of people who are trying to build sustainable, slow-growing, bootstrapped businesses.

Congratulations Arvid. Your story is inspirational and wish you success with the book as well.
If I may go off-topic for a bit, what's the WP theme you use for your landing page?
-
2
Thank you very much. Much appreciated!
The theme is Penscratch 2, with a number of plugins and stylistic "alterations" (custom CSS overwriting very stupid and obnoxious defaults). It serves me really well. I might actually want to write a blog post about that. A blog post about a blog. Why not!

Paperbacks! Ha ha!
The quintessential American developer believes in the power of software until it is time to learn something real. 👹👹👹
Congratulations on your launch and ensuing sales!
-
2
Gotta tell you, I love my Kindle and aimlessly scrolling through PDFs on High-Def screens as much as anyone, but there's something to a paper book that just makes it OBJECTIVELY better :P
-
1
True that!
I think scrolling erodes our attention span. It kinda goes against the grain of saccadic perception, whereas a page turn on a physical book to transition to the next page that then remains stationary for a while until we have soaked all of the content makes for a huge difference. ♥️
-
1
That's a solid point. And then there is the whole thing with artificial light and resolution.

Bought a a copy last night - I read your blog posts with respect to Stage 1 and 2 which were incredibly clear and concise. The usefulness density in the book so far has been astounding. Thank you for writing this, Arvid!

Beautiful Arvid!
Selling a book is a super hard task, I am super happy for you. I bought it this morning. I plan to read it next week.
I am hoping that can help me to grow nomadmail.io and coffeelist.co, two very different products between them.
Enjoy this moment! Regards from Wroclaw.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I bet you'll find something in there for both your projects. Greetings from Berlin! :D

Hell yeah Arvid! Glad to see you out there shining, I know I got my copy! Haven't gotten a chance to dig in yet but excited for it.

After 6 months of writing every day, epic battles with my editors, and a lot of guessing how self-publishing is supposed to work, I am excited to announce that I have finally published Zero to Sold in Print, eBook, and ePDF.
Here's the book page on my blog.
The book is now available from Amazon and Gumroad.
If you've read my free guide with the same name before, you will love the book. It takes the compendium and turns it into a cohesive, fully-fledged book.
It all started with a couple of blog posts that evolved into a list of articles, which then turned into the compendium. When I released that, people asked me to turn it into a book. I guess I didn't have much of a choice ;)
So, what is Zero to Sold, the book?
It's 105,000 words, 498 pages, condensed and no-fluff advice on building a bootstrapped business. I don't claim to know everything, but I share everything I know. And nothing more.
The book goes from ideation to acquisition, from the Preparation Stage to Survival to Stability to Growth. Wherever you are on your entrepreneurial journey bootstrapping a business, you will find something that will give you perspective.
That's because I wrote the book for myself 5 years ago, when I first started looking into Indie Hackers and the Twitter bootstrapping community, finding myself overwhelmed. I would have loved to have a guide at that point, so I wrote one.
Things that I'm working on now:
- I'm doing a lot of marketing, reaching out to people
- I'm making notes when people point out issues within the book, typos, errors, technical and logistical issues with the purchase
- I'm considering creating an audiobook version. Not sure if I should narrate it (which I'd love, but it may not turn out too good) or get a professional narrator
If you have any feedback on the book, this post, or anything else, please let me know.
Today is a great day. Engagement on Twitter is through the roof!
I love this community! 🥰

Like the cover!
Can you share with what tools you wrote and published it?
-
2
Purchased the ePub format! because I see so much value in that 498 pages just for $9.99
-
2
Thanks for supporting me with that!
I priced the book at this level for that reason. I assume that a lot of the people who need some advice and guidance most don't have too much of a book budget.
Glad to hear you think it's valuable :D Enjoy!
-
-
2
I would suggest you do the audiobook right now yourself, and get that up on Gumroad as a higher-priced tier. For how much time you spent on the book, recording the audiobook is only a few hours over the course of a few days. Basic recording tech is good enough that it's perfectly acceptable. Later if you want to do something more professional for Audible or whatever, you can just take down your DIY version. But while you're still in the launch phase I would think yes, get the DIY audiobook up on Gumroad. I wrote about my results here, but there's not much more there for you than what I've suggested above. Congrats and it looks great! ;-)
-
1
Thanks for the insight. I do like the challenge of recording the whole thing. Hmmm... That's going to be a tough decision to make. Mainly because the book has 498 pages :D
-
-
2
Congrats from a fellow Berlin IndieHacker! The book is on my Kindle waiting to be read. Are you going to any Berlin meetups (after corona) or can you recommend some?

Dankesehr! I used to go to the real-life Berlin IndieHackers meetup. Nothing else. But that one, I can recommend. I hope it'll be back on at some point.

In times of cheap info products, I am just overly excited for this. It's clear to me that you put sweat into this over 6 (!) months and then sell it for a price that is below many 1-week e-books on the market today.
Happy to work with you and to now have a chance to support this. Will get my paperback signed one day :)

Ha, I would love to draw a cat into your copy, that's for sure :D Thanks for the kind words, Dominic.

Well done, Arvid! The world needs more books like this and I’ll 100% show this to my founders in The School of Design.
I’ve written a number of books – published by everyone from Apress to me! – and I know how much of your heart and soul goes into them. Great work on reaching the finish line!
If someone else is reading this, now is the perfect time to start a startup. If you can build a business now and weather this storm, you’ll be set for life
Good luck, everyone.

Congrats Arvid. Well deserved. It is easy to see the insane amount of hard work and value you provide in this. Really makes me happy to see Makers realize the benefit from giving back value like this.
Well done!

Just 37 episodes into The Bootstrapped Founder podcast, I have just now crossed the 10,000 listens.
It seems that releasing at least one new episode a week without fail since February 5th is paying off.
Here is what I've done recently to improve the podcast:
- I've added music. There is an intro, an outro, and some kind of music that plays whenever I read the sponsored messages
- I've started asking for questions on Twitter. On Monday or Tuesday, I will ask a question related to the topic of the show, and I note down the questions I get on Twitter. Then, I respond to them in the second half of the show.
- I try to keep each show between 20 and 30 minutes.
- After I am done with the editing, I make 5-7 short videos using the Headliner app. Those videos look like this and are super useful, as they can be played right within Twitter. I schedule one per weekday, and link the podcast episode with each.
And that's it. To another 10k! :)
Here is a gigantic screenshot with all my podcast stats
And here is the podcast.

Congrats. 10k is a nice milestone to cross. Here's to the next 100,000!
p.s. DM me, I've got some changes coming to Smash Notes that might help with that.
I'm happy to report that the Bootstrapped Founder Newsletter has now reached over 1500 subscribers, with only 10 unsubscribed over the last week.
I am still impressed with an opening rate twice the industry average, and barely anyone canceling. It's great to see that my consistent posting on Twitter and here on IndieHackers seems to continuously attract new readers to my weekly half-essay-half-link-list publication.
Here are the stats: 1500 Subs,50,47% open rate, 12,92% click rate.
In one of the next episodes, I will announce the official launch of my book, Zero to Sold. I can't wait to see how many of my readers will engage with the book that has been half a year in the making.

What is the strategy for getting traffic to your website? What is the path to becoming a subscriber?
-
1
I talk about the blog on my podcast. I link to my newsletter from the blog.
I tweet my weekly articles out every week and link to the latest issue.
I also share my newsletter subscriber growth here, in an article like this. Since my audience are other founders, it's a perfect fit.
-
-
2
Looks great and I've just signed up.
I'm sure you'd increase your sign up rate 50%+ if you added the newsletter sign up box just below your bio / photo with a great call to action 'Receive Daily Actionable Strategies to...' Make it stand out.
I would have missed it completely had you not have mentioned it here.
-
1
Thanks so much!
Interesting suggestion. Do you mean inside each article? So many bios and photos around :)
-
-
2
You keep that quality writing, more will come I'm sure. When there is a chance now, I want to thank you. Gained some great insights. From the last ones, about tribes, it really changed some shitty behaviors of mine that I'm doing online.
And from my perspective of your %12 click rate, I mostly don't click anything after reading your content, it was fulfilling so don't want to mess with it. I just read as a whole including links and stories sections and close without clicking. If there was a way for measuring the user session, The Bootstrapped Founder would have a high rate.
-
2
Thank you very much! I am so glad to hear this. I'd rather have someone feel "full" after reading the newsletter than "hungry still."
This sure gives me some perspective. I don't want to taint the newsletter with attempts to monetize it through sponsored content. I'll just keep it as it is, a long story, with a few links that I also found interesting. Might remove the links altogether and just focus on the story.
Lots to think about. Thank you for this amazingly actionable feedback!

Haha, thanks! That was literally me in January. No worries. It's all about keeping it going.

In less than two weeks, another 100 subscribers joined the Bootstrapped Founder Newsletter.
Here are the stats: 1401 Subs, 51.24% open rate, 13.64% click rate.
Honestly, I haven't done much for growth other than the usual: I release an article every week, I recorded and publish a podcast episode, and I am very active on Twitter.
My last few weeks have been busy working with my editor on the book version of Zero to Sold, my bootstrapping guide. I'm looking forward to sharing that with my list once the book is all done, which I expect to happen at the end of June.
I added an email capture (with a free couple of chapters from the book) to the Zero to Sold page. That one has 53 subscribers. As I am not promoting that anywhere actively, those subscribers trickle in slowly.
Slow and steady is the theme for my audience. It seems to work pretty well, and I am in no rush. Here to stay :)

About
On TBF, I explain how to start, run and sell a bootstrapped business. I believe that bootstrapping is a desirable, value- and wealth-generating way of running a company, and still many people shy away from it.

Awesome! Happy to follow your progress and cheer you along!
Very excited to be a part of this Arvid :) Please keep a log of this journey of writing your book as it's an interesting case study in audience first itself :D
Yeah, expect lots of milestones on this one :)
THANK FOR SHARING
This style of writing is always good. Three years ago I entered college. Didn't really want to study. Since I wrote many articles about "pro choice abortion" for example, I used https://gradesfixer.com/free-essay-examples/pro-choice-abortion/ for this. I got fed up with it and decided to drop out of college and start writing my book. At the moment I have already 4 publications and I am not going to stop. This is the story I had.
Sounds excellent!
Can't wait for this! I'll be following your journey closely!
