I need 600 for ramen profitability, but hey it's something and I feel pretty good about it. I'm switching away from development and going full marketing for awhile. It's not really my element and I kinda hate it so far, but we'll see what I can do :)

February 9, 2020 Product Hunt Results (#3)

I think I had a pretty successful product hunt launch yesterday.

It seems to still be driving traffic the day after but yesterday we had:

#3 On product hunt

462 visitors

250 sign ups (It's totally free, so that probably helps, I guess doesn't indicate they will actually stick around)

2 Patrons totaling $11/mo

Now I'm trying to figure out where to market in terms of places where a plant based diet community already exists. I think I can have more success with people already in alignment on this rather than a wider audience of people who may be hesitant to adopt dietary changes.

All in all, positive response from the internet yesterday makes me feel pretty happy and that I'm onto something and not a crazy person!

February 8, 2020 (Re)Launching as a FREE site

The Scientific Meal Planner is relaunching as an absolutely free public service. This update also includes nutrient data and printable shopping lists! As I was building this I kind of just felt gross asking for money when my actual goal was to spread this (hopefully) helpful tool as far and wide as possible.

Here's the introduction video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8cNjhnz

And product hunt! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/the-scientific-meal-planner

August 24, 2019 Launching!

And we're live! I've posted to relevant reddit communities! I haven't really validated my idea beyond knowing I wanted this app for myself (I know, not recommended). I guess now we're going to find out how many others like me exist!

So time to see what the reaction is!

Ok so all I did was post to reddit on three relevant subreddits so far.

    In one day I got:
    286 visitors
40 people signed up for the free trial
    0 actual sales :(

Little worried I made the free trial too generous! It gives 10 free meal plan generations, but I figured people would click around testing the different modes and replacing recipes and thus waste a few of them and run out quickly. Looking at the amount people actually used, they are a bit more skimpy with their free generations. So I think I may reduce to 5 in the future.

Lots of good feedback. Seems like a lot of people are into tracking calories/nutrients and there is a lot of people on the fence saying they might use it if I had that feature. So maybe I'll try to get that going.

    Post the link here.

My first reaction when I land on the page is WOW, this is a great looking site. As I scroll down a little bit, it gets pretty heavy in text. It might be cool to add some pictures of sample meals that you might get from the site, just to break up the sections. Also the pricing was a bit hard to find. The site looks great, just not my style of diet but it looks pretty cool!

    Good luck!

Thanks for the thoughts! You're definitely right about the pricing - I'll try to highlight it more somehow or maybe give it it's own page.

In February I managed to reduce my 'real' job down to 2 days a week so I could pursue this crazy idea I had. I wanted to bring nutrition science enthusiast level meal planning to the masses!

Now roughly 6 months later and I'm prepping to launch in the coming days. It feels cathartic to finally have achieved what I set out to do. Now come what may!
