The Unsexy Stack

I'm Alex... solo developer on Cape Cod. After years of building products and watching good ideas die under infrastructure complexity, I built The Unsexy Stack.

What it is: A FastAPI + Next.js 15 SaaS boilerplate sold on Gumroad.

The thesis: Boring tech ships products. PostgreSQL, REST APIs, a monolith. The same patterns Shopify and GitHub built on.

What's different about it:

Most SaaS boilerplates sell you demo-ready code. I wanted to sell production-ready code. So I built:

- 111 tests (71 backend, 40 frontend) with coverage enforcement in CI

- 17 PDF guides... actual documentation, not a README

- 6 architecture diagrams (system overview, auth flow, payment flow, database ERD, deployment)

- A 44-item security checklist covering auth, webhooks, CORS, and everything you need before launch

The stack: FastAPI (async Python), Next.js 15 (React 19), PostgreSQL, Clerk auth, Stripe billing. Two apps, one server.

Pricing: 3 tiers on Gumroad

- Starter ($67): Backend tests, core PDFs, the boilerplate

- Professional ($147): Full test suite, Stripe integration, security checklist, 11 PDFs

- Agency ($297): Everything + Docker, CI/CD, client handoff template, 10-developer license, 1-hour onboarding call

Why I built it: I'm a Python developer. I looked at every SaaS boilerplate on the market. 9 out of 11 are JavaScript-only. The two Python options are either Django (synchronous, frontend bolted on) or backend-only. Nobody combined FastAPI with a modern Next.js frontend. So I built it.

What's next: Gathering feedback, writing comparison content, and eventually adding multi-tenancy to the Agency tier.
