Tilebo Español

Free Scrabble-style game for learning Spanish vocabulary

I built Tilebo Español — a free, browser-based Spanish vocabulary game. It's Scrabble-style: you form words from tiles, and the curated words come with definitions and example sentences so you're learning meaning as you play. No signup, works on any device.

It's early, and my analytics are showing a pattern I can't crack from the inside. A real chunk of visitors land on the game and leave without ever placing a single tile — full letter bag, zero seconds of actual play. They're not bouncing off the gameplay; they're bouncing before it even starts.

So I think I have a landing-to-first-action problem. But I've stared at this thing so long I genuinely can't see what's tripping people up in that first ten seconds.

If any of you are willing to click through and just notice your own reaction — what makes you hesitate between arriving and starting? — I'd be hugely grateful. A few specific things I'm wondering:

  • Is it unclear how to begin, or what to do first?

  • Is there too much in front of you before you can play?

  • Does it just not deliver fast enough on whatever made you curious?

Play it here: https://spanish.tilebo.app/?ref=indiehackers

Happy to return the favor on anyone's project. Thanks in advance.
