Let me set the scene.

It's March. I just wrapped up my best freelance month ever — around ₹85,000 in income. I should've been celebrating. Instead, I was at 11pm staring at a government website, three browser tabs open, a YouTube tutorial playing in the background, and absolutely no clue what I actually owed in taxes.

The tax calculation rabbit hole is very real

The thing nobody tells you about going freelance — or even just switching jobs — is how badly the existing tools fail you.

I tried the "official" income tax calculators first. They're either buried in 2009-era UI, require you to already know what half the fields mean, or spit out a number with zero explanation. I tried spreadsheets. I watched tutorials. I even asked a CA friend, who gave me a ballpark and charged me for it.

The problem isn't that tax is complicated (well, it is). The problem is that most tax calculators online are either:

• Paywalled behind a "premium" tier

• So cluttered with ads they're barely usable

• Built for accountants, not regular people

• Just… wrong (I've seen this more than once)

For a freelancer trying to do a quick salary tax calculation or a student figuring out their first take-home pay, none of these options work. You just want a clean answer, fast.

It got me thinking about why this gap exists

I started poking around more. It wasn't just income tax calculators that were broken. It was all kinds of everyday financial tools.

CGPA to percentage? Students googling formulas at 2am. Salary increment calculators? Employees trying to negotiate raises with zero sense of what the numbers actually mean. These aren't niche edge cases — they're situations millions of people hit every year.

The tools exist. But they're either ugly, paid, inaccurate, or surrounded by so much noise you don't trust the output.

So I built something simple

I'm not going to pretend I set out to build a startup. Honestly, I just got frustrated enough to do something about it.

I put together Toolisky — a free collection of clean, fast, no-signup financial tools. The goal was simple: you open it, you get your answer, you leave. No ads blocking the button. No forced account creation. No dark patterns.

Right now it includes:

• Tax calculators — quick income tax breakdowns without the jargon

• A CGPA to percentage calculator (students, this one's for you)

• A salary increment calculator for when you're negotiating or just planning ahead

Is it going to replace a CA for complex filings? No. But for 80% of everyday situations — checking what your take-home looks like, figuring out an approximate tax liability, understanding how a raise changes your net salary — it does the job in under 30 seconds.

What I've learned building financial tools for "regular" people

The bar for useful isn't that high, honestly. People don't need fancy. They need:

1. Clear inputs — ask me only what you need

2. Instant results — don't make me click five times

3. Plain language output — tell me what the number means

That's it. The best income tax calculator isn't the one with the most features. It's the one someone can open on their phone between meetings and actually trust.

Where I'm at now

Toolisky is still early. I'm adding more tools based on what people actually search for and ask about. The tax calculators section gets the most traffic (not surprising given the pain), and I'm working on making those even more comprehensive for different income brackets and filing situations.
