TopAlternativesTo
Software alternatives with checked pricing
For the last two months we have been building TopAlternativesTo, an independent "what should I use instead of X" site for business software.
The bet: comparison content is mostly biased listicles with stale pricing, so we do the boring part properly. Every price is checked against the vendor's own pricing page, with the source URL and the date next to it. Every guide opens with a verdict that names a winner per use case. Rankings are never for sale.
What is live today:
- 360+ tool profiles, 358 "[tool] alternatives" guides, 59 categories
- a free keyless REST API and an MCP server, so AI agents can query the catalogue
- vendors can submit their product, and a human reviews every request
Most of the pipeline is automated: pricing rechecks, screenshot capture, a blog writer, the review queue. Two of us run it as a side project.
The honest part: Google has sent us 0 clicks so far. Average position 58 on about 370 impressions. The domain is young, so we are building the authority base first and betting on the long game plus AI answer engines citing checked data.
Question for people who have shipped SEO-first products: what moved the needle first for you, links or content depth?
