Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a quick update on a side project I’ve been working on: Topsoil Calculator.

Most people on Indie Hackers are chasing the next big SaaS or AI play, but I decided to go in the opposite direction—back to the basics. I realized that homeowners and landscaping contractors often struggle with the "simple" math of calculating bulk materials. Doing it wrong means wasting hundreds of dollars on over-delivery or stopping mid-project because you're short.

The Goal: I wanted to build the most frictionless, "get-in-get-out" tool for calculating soil volume. No pop-ups, no complex logins—just accurate results for rectangular or circular garden beds.

What I've learned so far:

1. Utility SEO is real: People are actively searching for these specific tools every day.

2. UX matters in the "boring" niches: Most existing calculators are cluttered with ads from 2005. A clean, mobile-responsive UI is a huge competitive advantage.

3. Micro-tools as Lead Gen: Even a simple calculator can serve as a great entry point for a larger brand or affiliate play in the home improvement space.
