Transfer Courses for the experienced developer
Hey, I'm Josh and I am a software engineer. Last year when I applied for a new position, I had to learn a new programming language from the ground up - C# together with the whole .NET ecosystem.
I searched for interactive courses like ones from codecademy, and started a C# beginner course.
Just after an hour of doing the course, I noticed that this was very unproductive. I was only taught things I already know - what data types are, what a variable assignment is, how OOP works and much more learning material not very useful to me. The actual amount of learnings was very low..
I stopped the course and figured that I might learn C# way better when I transfer my existing knowledge from Java, Python, C++ and TypeScript - I want to learn the new programming language in relation to these. Especially for C# and Java this makes sense - most of the syntax surprisingly similar, I hence need to focus more on the differences and the nuances of the standard library itself.
I tried collecting some material on how Java and C# are similar and different, together with syntax comparison tables, comparisons of the standard library and diagrams. Now, I am making a product out of this.
Each course has two interactive code panes - one for the source language and one for the target language. Both can be compiled and run directly inside the course, and give you exercises together with hints for learning your new programming language more efficiently by applying your existing dev knowledge :)
If you have experienced something similar, feel free to check out https://transfer-pilot.com/ - I am happy for any kind of feedback! Currently, I am focusing on two courses:
- Learn C# as a Java developer
- Learn Java as a Python developer
