February 24, 2023 Combining My Love for Programming and Outdoor Activities

As an avid programmer and outdoor enthusiast, I've always dreamed of creating a project that merges these two passions. That's why I built TravelerMap.net, a community-driven website that allows users to explore National Parks from around the world.

I teamed up with my brother to create TravelerMap. He's responsible for SEO, content creation, and marketing. Our goal is to provide authentic information about places that cut through the fluff and marketing jargon typically found on travel blogs and websites - we still need some of it for SEO:]. By leveraging the collective knowledge of our community, we can offer valuable insights and recommendations that will help travelers plan their trips more efficiently.

Like many community-based websites, our biggest challenge is to find our initial user base. We're actively reaching out to people who share our passion for National Parks and outdoor activities to join our community and help us grow.

As a solo developer, I've built TravelerMapusing Elixir, Phoenix, LiveView, and Maplibre for maps. Our technology stack is robust and scalable, ensuring that our website can handle an increasing number of users as our community grows. It's hosted on Heroku.

We believe that TravelerMaphas the potential to become a valuable resource for anyone interested in visiting National Parks worldwide. Our website offers a visually appealing platform that's easy to navigate and contains community-driven information that's both trustworthy and reliable.

We're excited to see where TravelerMap.net takes us and welcome other entrepreneurs who are interested in collaborating or learning more about our startup to get in touch. Join us as we explore the world's National Parks and help others do the same!

Congrats! I really love it as an avid tramper.

    • Are you planning on crowd sourcing to improve the data capture like we do for water refill stations all over our country, etc..
    • It would be great to see it more world focus rather than North American + international on LP.
    • app name is counter-intuitive fm. Why did you choose TravelerMap rather than ParksMap or TrekkerMap ? As the tool is for exploring national parks around the world.
    • Page did not pickup my location (NZ) so took a few clicks. Then it zoomed in on some random national park (not even close to where I am). Would be great if It zoomed on open to where I am and at the visibility I can see my closed national parks to me.
    • I do really love it. I noticed our countries' outback hutt programme is not highlighted so trampers know where they can stay. To the random place the page auto-zoomed on was 'arthurs pass' and the page said:

We apologize but the information on Arthur's Pass National Park is still being compiled and is not yet available on our website. Rest assured, we are working hard to provide you with comprehensive details about this beautiful park.

Going forward, I would love to see a Citizen Scientist app attached to your National Park app. Citizen Scientists apps enable mobile data capture for rubbish; track damage; incorrect signs; missing signs and other local issues. These issues are reported and a live stream of status is shown to ensure transparency (The Ocean Cleanup has both an android and apple app for this to their world map - https://theoceancleanup.com/research/citizen-science/citizen-science-map/). This style of citizen action is popular from where I am.

Travel blogs and marketing sites often show only "good parts" and leave out important information. That's why TravelerMap aims to provide real, no-fluff information to help people plan their nature adventures.
