2500 mailing list subscribers!

Next up, 5k 💪😁

On another note, does anyone know of good tools to segment web visitors into user groups/personas?
Ie. are they mainly content writers, entrepreneurs, affiliate marketers, etc

Right now I want to better understand who the most loyal returning users are. A tool/app that could do this automatically would be amazing? And magic ✨ (Google analytics just gives me gender and age it seems)

That's a nice number! What has been working best for you?

    1. 3

Thanks Rosie! I had a great Hacker News launch that bumped me up by over 1.5k subs.

After that, it has been Reddit r/entrepreneur, Indie hackers and Facebook groups.

Need a more repeatable methodology though since you can only launch a Show HN once though :D

      1. 1

Can you share examples of what you're sharin on r/Entrepreneur and Facebook? Just wandering what your "content" looks like?

        1. 1

Right now I've just been sharing the homepage aka "look at this thing I built". Gets old for people quickly though, so been thinking about what kinda interesting content I can regularly output. Gonna test some different types of content pieces shortly!

      2. 1

Wow 1.5K subs (can I be you pls 😁)! Just checked the website out and subscribed as well - can't believe the domain 'trennd' wasn't already taken, that's great hahah

        1. 1

Haha thanks man 😁Yeah I was pretty glad to get trennd.co!

Somebody is sitting on trennd.com though, so maybe later down the line I'll pick that up... 🤞

          1. 1

you're right, it will be more memorable that way
Also, I'm still wondering how to employ your site to find interesting product ideas -- things people are searching for seem so weird, no idea what to make of "dallas wings" being popular...

            1. 2

              For sure.

Yeah I'm working on making the filters and sorting as useful as possible, so different people can really hone in on the things they want to see. Otherwise it's too random and can be pretty weird like you say!

              1. 1

OK! I'll be on the lookout

  2. 2

First time seeing your site. Nifty!

If you're looking to segment users, I think one option could be (during or right after signup) a simple question and a dropdown. Especially if you can highlight a real benefit to them from doing this.

Also, if all you want is to understand more about what people have signed up so far, mailing them a question (possibly linking to a super-brief questionnaire) could be helpful. Simple user research. You could pull that into your CRM.

Not aware of any tools or APIs that do automatic segmenting reliably. That said, there's plenty of tools out there I haven't personally tried. :)

    1. 2

      Thanks Peter!!

Yeah I think you're probably right - just directly ask them!

I'll probably just email the highest returning users the questionnaire like you suggest. I want to know why people are coming back (aka the real value/use case and who this is for), rather than why people are signing up (often just curiosity).

      1. 1

Sounds like the easiest, quickest solution, doesn't it? :) Good luck with Trennd! I think you're on to something.

        1. 1

          Ahah absolutely :D thanks man!

  3. 1

I checked the website and the idea and it's super cool!

I cheer you up to continue doing it!!!

PS: When I declared in indiehacker that you were going to start working on it, to "create" the project in indiehackers, did you have to provide an url? or you can create a product without url? Because I still have nothing in production but I want to create the product on indiehackers

    1. 1

      Thanks Victor!

Not sure on the URL. You could buy the domain though and throw up a landing page :D

      1. 1

Finally, I released the landing page here: https://www.chooseyourplant.com/

Could you please give me some feedback 🙏? It would mean so much to me https://www.indiehackers.com/post/would-love-to-hear-your-honest-feedback-d1efb7778e

        1. 2

Hey Victor, love the landing page - very nice on the eyes! And it's clear on what it does 👍

      2. 1

Yees, I'm gonig to do it soon. I'm waiting for an abstract image to use in the Hero section

  4. 1

    Woohoo!
    Congrats!
Make sure to share when you're nearing that next milestone so we can give a big 🙌

    1. 1

      Thanks Anita!! Will do 😄👍

  5. 1

That’s awesome!! Could you share how you got your first 100 subscribers?

    1. 2

It was by posting on Reddit. The key is to provide value first and then plug your site. Otherwise, you just get eaten alive there.

@harrydry actually wrote a great case study about it with Trennd as the example: https://marketingexamples.com/content/self-promote-on-reddit

Clearbit does what you are looking for but I don't how much it will cost you. It can be extremely expensive.

    1. 1

I used Clearbit for a few research projects a couple of years ago and found the data very hit and miss. Useful, as long as there was plenty of room for error. Maybe they're way better now.

      1. 1

clearbit is 5 years old, so I would say that 2 years is a long long time, especially in tech

        1. 1

          That’s a fair point.

    2. 1

Wow, Clearbit looks awesome. They knew even my name when I landed on their site first visit. Creepy...

But yeah, they're very pricey. So I need to look for a cheapo Clearbit alternative!

      1. 1

leadfeeder has a free version, albacross a 14-days free trial. They are not as good as clearbit but better than nothing

        1. 1

will check them out - thanks Luqa!
