December 1, 2020 Exploding Topics 2.0 on Product Hunt

Hey hackers!

Almost exactly 1 year ago, we launched Exploding Topics on Product Hunt. And we were overwhelmed by the response... #1 Product of the Month!

So we got to work improving the tool.

And today we're proud to show you ET 2.0:

⚡ 3X new trends (1,579 previously → 4,492 now).

👨‍👧‍👦 Related exploding trends (on each topic page).

🍒 We cherry-pick the best topics for our homepage so it's constantly fresh.

🔎 Refined trend detection algorithm to detect better quality trends. And MUCH sooner.

🔦 New sources for detecting trends: podcasts, Amazon (+ many more).

📈 Added growth values and descriptions to all topics.

🤖 Turbocharged the search algorithm.

🐕 Refined categories (including pets) and streamlined topic filter options.

💌 Free weekly newsletter with our best Exploding Topics. Plus, expert insight and analysis.

👏 One indie hacker even built and SOLD a SaaS product based off a trending topic he found on ET.

After our first launch, everyone asked for an Exploding Topics newsletter. So we built it and 60K people now subscribe 🙌

Tell us what you'd like to see next from ET in 2021! 😊👂

@joshahowarth this is amazing! I was about to suggest doing the trends by categories but you have already done it. People working in fast paced industries like Finance and Legal could find this helpful.

Is there a way you could showcase the traffic and growth for a list of keywords and maybe how many websites have mentioned it? Again people in finance and legal might want to keep an eye out for certain keywords and when the traffic spikes, might want to dig deeper to see why the spike has occurred and make use of the opportunity.

Could be a useful tool for businesses to check their new competitors in the market too.

    1. 1

Thank you! Glad you like it :)

You can actually do some of that already:

This is amazing. I can people who invest in SEO using this alot.

June 16, 2020 50K emails subscribers (after 14 months)

Hey everyone,

We made it past 50K email subscribers! 🥳

After starting this project from scratch in April 2019, 51K people now subscribe to our weekly newsletter: Exploding Topics Tuesday.

ET List Growth

(This only goes back to November since we moved over from Mailchimp to Aweber then.)

How did we get here? Here’s a rough breakdown:

0 ➡️ 80 subs:

  • Posting on subreddits (eg. r/entrepreneur, r/EntrepreneurRideAlong)

80 ➡️ 200 subs:

  • Posting on IndieHackers, Facebook groups, etc

200 ➡️ 2,000 subs:

  • Hacker News launch (front page!)

2,000 ➡️ 2,500 subs:

  • Twitter “Word of Mouth” (tweets from big names like Rand Fishkin)

2,500 ➡️ 6,000 subs:

  • Product Hunt launch (#1 product of the month!)

6,000 ➡️ 15,000 subs:

  • Promoting to Brian’s Backlinko massive audience via email/YouTube/LinkedIn
  • Organic mentions in other HUGE newsletters - Morning Brew and Kevin Kelly’s (Founder of Wired) Recomendo

15K ➡️ 51K subs:

  • Facebook ads with extensive split testing (both ad copy and landing page)
  • Cross promotions with other newsletters (like Harry Dry’s Marketing Examples)

51K ➡️ ??? subs:

It still blows my mind how many people are subscribed and how fast it has grown. A year ago, none of this would have seemed remotely realistic. 🤯

And yet now, my co-founders Brian, Kyle and I are shooting for 100K subscribers by the end of 2020.

So I hope this helps show fellow Indiehackers how quickly your thing can snowball if you keep on it.

I know I left out A LOT of details. So any questions on specifics, just let me know in the comments. 👋

how did you use Facebook groups to grow? What strategies worked for you?

  2. 1

    Love this

  3. 1

Congrats Josh! Once you hit 100k whats the current front runner for monetisation?

    1. 1

Cheers Harry :) Currently we're thinking premium newsletter for monetization.

  4. 1

You've built an amazing product. I've used insights from your newsletter to decide what markets to enter next or what products to promote. When asked about what newsletters to subscribe to? I've recommended yours. Congrats on crossing 50K and I'm quite positive that you will cross 100K mark too.

    1. 1

Thanks man, that means a lot! Appreciate it 😊

  5. 1

    That's great news, congrats Josh!!

    1. 1

      Cheers Monik :D

  6. 1

Congratulations Josh. Been following you since last June IIRC. You have done awesome work.

Do you mind sharing what us the open rate currently?

    1. 1

Thanks for following Vivek. Appreciate it 🙌

Sure, open rates range from 35% - 50% depending on the week and which Gmail tab we land in.

      1. 1

Are there methods you've learned to have more control over which tab you land in?

        1. 1

Yeah, a lot of it is sender reputation. Which you can build over time if people open and engage with your emails.

And the email content matters a lot too. Especially certain words or phrases that can trigger Gmail to flag it as promo or spam. Check out this tool to test for that: https://litmus.com/gmail-tabs

          1. 1

            Huge! Great link share.

            Thanks for sharing.

  7. 1

Congrats on the success! 🍾 Do you know what your average CPL (cost per lead) on Facebook was/is?? I'm currently promoting my newsletter and got it down to around $0.60 per signup...no idea if that's good or not 🤷🏻‍♂️

    1. 1

Cheers! $0.60 is extremely good. Our is higher than that, but it does tend to increase as you widen your net.

  8. 1

What was the effective cost per subscriber from FB? How's the churn been on those?

    1. 1

It was ranging $1.5 - $3 when we very first started the FB ads. Since Kyle joined as a co-founder, he's taken the reigns on FB ads so I'm not sure. He's an absolute pro though and has it properly optimized now. Churn is probably too early to say.

      1. 1

Would be curious to compare email capture ads vs. promoted posts that bring people to your site (where they then encounter signup forms/popups/etc).

We ran multiple experiments across publishers using Pico (for on-site signups) and so far (to my surprise) the email capture ads way underperformed. But we're still trying to tease out confounding variables so this isn't conclusive yet.

  9. 1

    Great stuff.

You got one more - subscribed.

Is Brian one of the founders?

    1. 1

Noice! Glad to have you onboard :)

And yup, Brian is one of the founders. Along with @kyle_byers

  10. 1

    Very awesome!!

  11. 1

Hi Josh, can elaborate more on say sharing on reddit or indiehacker initially? How did you pitch? Link to those posts last year?

    Thanks!

    1. 1

Cheers Navdeep! Harry Dry actually explained it way better than I could with his awesome write-up of one of those reddit posts: https://marketingexamples.com/content/self-promote-on-reddit

      1. 1

        thanks Josh! will check

  12. 1

Big congrats and thanks for sharing the journey
You mentioned you have used other newsletters and other people's marketing channels.
I wonder how you approached them and convinced them into promoting your product: what did you offer in exchange ?

    1. 1

We'd promote them in return. Once you get over a certain size you can convince others to cross promote because they want to get in front of your audience too.

  13. 1

Thanks for sharing! Did you have to pay to promote to Backlinko's audience? Would appreciate it if you could tell us!

    1. 1

If I am not wrong Backlinko is a co-founder and exploding topic is part of his videos and articles automatically

      1. 1

Yup, Brian is a co-founder. So he sometimes shares Exploding Topics with his Backlinko audience to give us some exposure.

  14. 1

Very impressive growth, you’ll blow through 100k subs soon!

    1. 1

      Haha! I hope so :)

  15. 1

This is super growth @jhowarth15. Major congrats.

    1. 1

      Cheers Gordon 🙌

  16. 1

    Thank for sharing!
Did you use PPC on Twitter or it grew organically?

    1. 1

No prob. And twitter has been organic :D

      1. 1

Twitter has always been a mystery for me ;) I have zero ideas about how to grow it organically :D

    2. 1

      Whats PPC ?

  17. 1

Firstly, thanks for posting details about your milestones.
I am launching a newsletter for bootstrappers: https://www.producthunt.com/upcoming/the-bootstrapping-guide

It would be great if you could look into it and suggest some tips on growing my initial subscriber base. I will really appreciate it 🙂

  18. 1

Congratulations! And thanks for the detailed milestone, explaining how you grew it

    1. 1

      Thanks Martin!

  19. 1

    Nice to see this!

    1. 1

      Thanks Patryk 👍

  20. 1

Just wow. I remember when you posted here on IH back then (the project had another name I think?). What’s your plan to make it profitable?

    1. 1

Cheers Andrea. I know - crazy right! (It was called Trennd back then)

We're working on the monetization angle. A premium newsletter likely makes most sense. Interested to get your thoughts on that?

      1. 1

I’d try to figure out who among your audience is willing to pay for a premium product first. (Journalists? Dropshippers? I have no idea). But you have Kyle now so I don’t think you need my advice 🙂

        1. 1

"you have Kyle now so I don’t think you need my advice" -> 💯% 😁

February 14, 2020 #1 Product of the Month

We launched Exploding Topics on Product Hunt on December 3rd and we got #1 for the day and eventually #1 for the month too!

I've been meaning to write-up a short summary for a while, so here goes:

How we did it:

  • People loved the site, but...

  • I'm not going to lie, with Brian Dean working on the project too now, his absolutely massive audience had a huge impact. When he announced the launch to his newsletter we got a LOT of traffic to ExplodingTopics.com. Then we had a product hunt banner on the site, so some of these people then went on to upvote us on PH.

  • At the same time, I wrote up the Trennd/Exploding Topics acquisition story on Medium and we got a huge amount of traffic from that when it hit #2 on Hacker News.

Results:

  • 80K visitors in December

  • 3K new subscribers (even though we weren't remotely optimized for emails at the time. We had a link in the footer taking you to a subscribe page and that was it.)

  • 23rd in Product Hunt's most upvoted products of the year newsletter

  • People kept asking what happened to the newsletter, so we've brought that back with a revamp.

Any questions or any other details you want to know just give me a shout!

    I would've called it FOMO 😂

Hahah that's a sweet name! And thanks man, glad you like it :D

  2. 1

    Thanks for sharing! Congrats!

  3. 1

@jhowarth15 is there any plans to monetize this?

    1. 1

The plan is to get sponsors for our newsletter in the future. But the tool is free :)

  4. 1

@jhowarth15 just wanted to say amazing job and amazing product! This is something every IndieHacker needs in their toolbox. I was using UberSuggest, but now I'm going to start using Exploding Topics. Thanks for the upload!

    1. 1

Cheers Yaro, I'm glad you like it!! This is exactly why I built it - to find the next big thing to build a SaaS app around.

      1. 1

I feel this tool is so underrated for first time solo saas entrepreneurs. You made my day!

This is nice work Josh! And from a local IH to myself (just down the road in Radcliffe here).

    1. 1

Hey Anton, great to know you're nearby! Wondering what kind of demand there is for a northern IH meetup :D

      1. 1

I believe there is a group that did some meetups last year in Manchester, but unsure if it's continuing.
Rammy's much easier to get to though and decent pubs too! :D

        1. 1

Ah interesting... Yeah "IH Rammy" has a good ring to it!! Let's keep an eye out for anyone else here in the area and maybe we can get one going :D

December 3, 2019 Trennd was acquired!!

UPDATE: This is the full story written up:
https://medium.com/@joshahowarth/how-my-show-hn-project-got-acquired-after-6-months-954f81ca6a18

Hey guys,

Trennd was acquired by Brian Dean of Backlinko!!

It’s so crazy… And it’s thanks to you fellow Indie Hackers showing me that it’s possible to build stuff without funding/team and slowly grow an audience around it.

 🙌

I hadn’t monetized yet and I was incredibly lucky with how things worked out.

 😅

But when I started reading Indie Hackers two years ago, I never thought this would be possible.

I’m writing up the whole story (including acquisition details) which I will post later today.

We’ve got a fresh new look, name and focus now too - Exploding Topics (much easier to remember and easy to spell.) 💃

And we’re launching on Product Hunt today. Both Brian and I will be there replying to comments all day! 🤗

Cheers,

Josh

Oh awesome. Really chuffed for you man. Big congrats

  14. 1

    Wow - huge - congrats!!

  15. 1

Product looks great, refined, and quality. I'm disappointed you let it go as soon as it started getting traction for so cheap, but I'm sure you've considered the strategy behind your decision.

I understand the idea behind "niche-ing" down - to try and get as much market share as possible within a domain you can compete in and then scale from there, but I am skeptical of the "professional bloggers" attack strategy.

I am 100% in agreement with you about,
"The problem is there are so many different potential customers: indie makers like me looking for their next project idea, investors looking for a company stock pick, affiliates seeking the next hot product or people just seeking to feed their curiosity."

I think that is the right direction 100%.

Philosophically, I think a large part of your success is like what Peter levels was saying, once you become big like Brian or he is, you become jaded, and your judgement isn't as great or focused as an up and coming entrepreneur who has to make it or break it in Japan. So trust your instincts!

    1. 1

      I think it's a win-win for both me and Brian :)

Glad you agree on niching down, we'll see how pro bloggers respond and we can always pivot to another customer segment.

And absolutely have to trust your instincts and see what people respond to :)

  16. 1

I gotta say...looking at what you have build here I realised thats the exact reason why I wanna learn how to code...to create something useful in a relatively short amount of time. Thanks...gave me some motivation to keep learning JS.

    1. 1

      Yeah keep it up man!

  17. 1

This is absolutely fantastic to hear! Congrats!

  18. 1

Nice one! Congratz! :) Did he take over the product or are you working on it together?

Haven't talked to Brian in a while but it seems he's venturing out of the SEO space. Pretty cool :)

    1. 1

nevermind, just saw that the question has been answered already. anyway, good luck! Brian is a smart guy and I am sure you guys will build something huge together!

      1. 1

Thank you Sebastian! Yeah Brian really knows his stuff - so it's awesome to be working with him on it.

  19. 1

Woohoo - currently number 1 on PH nice job! I love the name... it reminds me of the game Exploding Kittens and everyone loves exploding kittens.

    1. 1

Ahah that's true - exploding kittens rocks! Hopefully we live up to the name/adjective too :)

And yeah 💃 #1 for the moment... hoping we can hold onto that lead!

  20. 1

    Congratulations pal :)

    1. 1

      Thanks man! :D

  21. 1

I like the fresh look/name. Congrats!

Well done thats great, were you activity looking to sell or did it come out of the blue?

    1. 1

      Thank you :)

It came out of the blue - super lucky!

  23. 1

Congrats ! Can't wait to read your article :D

      Thank you!

And yeah, we did an ad swap back in September 😁

  25. 1

    Nice, well done, Josh.

I've always been a huge fan of Brian and his content. Great guy, and always pumps out actionable content.

Looking forward to your acquisition post later today!

PS: Rand Fishkin just tweeted about it, that's a "you made it" in my book! -> https://twitter.com/randfish/status/1201786391060856834

    1. 1

Thanks Frank! Yeah - it's fantastic he tweeted us, Rand is huge!! 😛

  26. 1

    Congrats!

Will you be staying on long term?

    1. 1

      Thanks man!!

Yeah I'm going to be staying on as a co-founder and consultant. I still have a revenue stake which is awesome! 😊

    2. 1

I am interested to hear the answer to this too. Will you stay on and still do product development or consulting? Or is this a 'walk away' acquisition?

September 17, 2019 2500 mailing list subscribers!

Next up, 5k 💪😁

On another note, does anyone know of good tools to segment web visitors into user groups/personas?
Ie. are they mainly content writers, entrepreneurs, affiliate marketers, etc

Right now I want to better understand who the most loyal returning users are. A tool/app that could do this automatically would be amazing? And magic ✨ (Google analytics just gives me gender and age it seems)

I checked the website and the idea and it's super cool!

I cheer you up to continue doing it!!!

PS: When I declared in indiehacker that you were going to start working on it, to "create" the project in indiehackers, did you have to provide an url? or you can create a product without url? Because I still have nothing in production but I want to create the product on indiehackers

    1. 1

      Thanks Victor!

Not sure on the URL. You could buy the domain though and throw up a landing page :D

      1. 1

Finally, I released the landing page here: https://www.chooseyourplant.com/

Could you please give me some feedback 🙏? It would mean so much to me https://www.indiehackers.com/post/would-love-to-hear-your-honest-feedback-d1efb7778e

Hey Victor, love the landing page - very nice on the eyes! And it's clear on what it does 👍

      2. 1

Yees, I'm gonig to do it soon. I'm waiting for an abstract image to use in the Hero section

  2. 1

    Woohoo!
    Congrats!
Make sure to share when you're nearing that next milestone so we can give a big 🙌

    1. 1

      Thanks Anita!! Will do 😄👍

First time seeing your site. Nifty!

If you're looking to segment users, I think one option could be (during or right after signup) a simple question and a dropdown. Especially if you can highlight a real benefit to them from doing this.

Also, if all you want is to understand more about what people have signed up so far, mailing them a question (possibly linking to a super-brief questionnaire) could be helpful. Simple user research. You could pull that into your CRM.

Not aware of any tools or APIs that do automatic segmenting reliably. That said, there's plenty of tools out there I haven't personally tried. :)

    1. 1

      Thanks Peter!!

Yeah I think you're probably right - just directly ask them!

I'll probably just email the highest returning users the questionnaire like you suggest. I want to know why people are coming back (aka the real value/use case and who this is for), rather than why people are signing up (often just curiosity).

      1. 1

Sounds like the easiest, quickest solution, doesn't it? :) Good luck with Trennd! I think you're on to something.

        1. 1

          Ahah absolutely :D thanks man!

  4. 1

That’s awesome!! Could you share how you got your first 100 subscribers?

    1. 1

It was by posting on Reddit. The key is to provide value first and then plug your site. Otherwise, you just get eaten alive there.

@harrydry actually wrote a great case study about it with Trennd as the example: https://marketingexamples.com/content/self-promote-on-reddit

      1. 1

        Cheers Josh!

  5. 1

Clearbit does what you are looking for but I don't how much it will cost you. It can be extremely expensive.

    1. 1

I used Clearbit for a few research projects a couple of years ago and found the data very hit and miss. Useful, as long as there was plenty of room for error. Maybe they're way better now.

      1. 1

clearbit is 5 years old, so I would say that 2 years is a long long time, especially in tech

        1. 1

          That’s a fair point.

    2. 1

Wow, Clearbit looks awesome. They knew even my name when I landed on their site first visit. Creepy...

But yeah, they're very pricey. So I need to look for a cheapo Clearbit alternative!

      1. 1

leadfeeder has a free version, albacross a 14-days free trial. They are not as good as clearbit but better than nothing

        1. 1

will check them out - thanks Luqa!

  6. 1

That's a nice number! What has been working best for you?

    1. 1

Thanks Rosie! I had a great Hacker News launch that bumped me up by over 1.5k subs.

After that, it has been Reddit r/entrepreneur, Indie hackers and Facebook groups.

Need a more repeatable methodology though since you can only launch a Show HN once though :D

Can you share examples of what you're sharin on r/Entrepreneur and Facebook? Just wandering what your "content" looks like?

        1. 1

Right now I've just been sharing the homepage aka "look at this thing I built". Gets old for people quickly though, so been thinking about what kinda interesting content I can regularly output. Gonna test some different types of content pieces shortly!

          1. 1

            Ok. Cheers Josh!

      2. 1

Wow 1.5K subs (can I be you pls 😁)! Just checked the website out and subscribed as well - can't believe the domain 'trennd' wasn't already taken, that's great hahah

        1. 1

Haha thanks man 😁Yeah I was pretty glad to get trennd.co!

Somebody is sitting on trennd.com though, so maybe later down the line I'll pick that up... 🤞

          1. 1

you're right, it will be more memorable that way
Also, I'm still wondering how to employ your site to find interesting product ideas -- things people are searching for seem so weird, no idea what to make of "dallas wings" being popular...

            1. 1

              For sure.

Yeah I'm working on making the filters and sorting as useful as possible, so different people can really hone in on the things they want to see. Otherwise it's too random and can be pretty weird like you say!

              1. 1

OK! I'll be on the lookout

September 8, 2019 Month 3 Summary: Code Cave

This month I scuttled back into my code cave 🦀. This was with the view to making Trennd more robust and sustainable for the long term. That's important, and I’ve definitely made a lot of progress on the backend towards that goal.

But at the same time, I’ve done zero marketing this month 🤦‍♂️. The hype last month around the Hacker News launch and Twittersphere has naturally died down, along with the web traffic.

The mailing list count is still ticking up everyday though despite this, and we’ve reached a good new equilibrium of 100-300 visitors to the site everyday. Both are green flags to me. (I’m not sure if green flags are actually a real thing. Emojipedia doesn’t think so… 🚩)

  • Subscribers: 2,334 🎉
  • Users: 5,065 🕵️‍♀️
  • Pageviews: 28,016 👀
  • Trends: 1,847 📈

It’s way too easy for me to put marketing on the backburner and keep building in general. That’s where I’m most comfortable. Yet, I know full well marketing should be an ongoing crusade, alongside product improvement.

The most successful indie hackers I see around - they have systemized routines that enable them to continually output valuable content.

So my new goal is to figure out my own process to enforce continual, ongoing marketing and stay disciplined. If I have a weekly process that I have to stick to, this should slowly yield results and compound over time.

For instance, writing 1 quality report about a trend and sharing to Reddit/Twitter/etc each week/month could be a good start. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on this front too, I’m all ears?! 👂

Rhetorical q: Why is 'Popeye's Chicken sandwiches' trending?

When I heard about that a few days ago, I was enamored with it. It's so interesting to me. Like, HOW did it all of a sudden just blow up? I watched YT videos and did a bunch of googling.

I would love to learn more about that the why from these trends, from a "hacker" perspective. Kinda like Marketing examples.

Could be an easy way to create content. You have the data.

    1. 1

Yeah Popeye's went HUGE last month. One of the craziest search trend graphs I've ever seen: https://trennd.co/trend/popeyes-chicken-sandwich

This content idea is gold, thanks Pat! As long as I can figure it out from googling etc. everyone wants to know the why so they can try to reproduce it.

Really want to try a Popeye's sandwich now too 😛

  2. 1

Great idea. Any plans to add a "Politics" category?

    1. 1

Potentially in the future, but not right now. Some categories, like politics, can start to look like a news and current affairs feed rather than trends.

Of course, this isn't always true. Like there can be growing political movements and broader political trends. But I want to keep the signal to noise ratio high.

  3. 1

You are on the right track trying to come up with a weekly content marketing strategy.

Now comes the difficult part: what kind of content should you create?

Ideally you should write something that has both the potential to resonate with people on social networks AND ranks on search engines in the long term. Good luck!

    1. 1

      Thanks Andrea!

Yeah the what is the tricky part for sure...

I might experiment with a few different kinds of content at first and see what resonates. Plus try to tailor that to some long-tail keywords.

Let me know if you have any ideas!

I read your interview for starterstory a few days ago. Asking Pat to add your trennd's link coul help a bit and you could do other interviews for relevant audiences.

    1. 1

Aha that’s awesome you found my Starter Story interview about WheelySales!

Honestly didn’t think about asking Pat to add Trennd link to the bottom of that, but definitely will do that! Seems so obvious now you say it - thanks Luqa ☺️

Yeah interviews are a great way to get in front of new audiences. Part of me feels like since Trennd is making $0 right now, nobody will want to listen. But at the same time, I know I shouldn’t let that hold me back!

      1. 1

Nice! Definitely add that backlink to the interview! Our site authority is pretty strong these days :)

        1. 1

Cheers Pat! That would be awesome, I'll ping you an email 🙌

August 29, 2019 Month 2 Summary: Hacker News Launch

Hi everyone,

Our second month was massive as we launched on Hacker News and the response was fantastic. A lot of quality discussion and Trennd even reached #1 on the front page, albeit very briefly!

No hacks or tricks for this one. But some general good practice when launching on Hacker News:

  • get your Show HN title right! (simple, clear and humble often works best)
  • draft an opening comment that is relatable
  • be active in the comments & discussion (reply to the nice/constructive comments and ignore any undue/negative criticism - this way you direct attention to the good stuff!)

This Show HN went on to have a huge domino effect onto Twitter. Dozens of people tweeted about Trennd. Amazingly we even got a shoutout from Rand Fishkin. This made my month. 🤩

All of this combined to rocket us above 2000 email subscribers. I’m ecstatic and excited to build this thing out further and see where we’re at in 12 months.

  • Subscribers: 2,263 🎉(+1,910)
  • Users: 28,353 🕵️‍♀️ (+26,274)
  • Pageviews: 124,026 👀(+116,453)
  • Trends: 1672 📈(+800)
  • Insights: 54 👁(+2)

I wrote up a full breakdown of events here:

(And apologies this month’s update is weeks late. It’s only the second one… and I already fell behind! I prefer coding to writing, but definitely need be more disciplined with these.)

Also, I’m heading to the Indie Hackers meet up in Tokyo in a few hours, so if anyone else is going say hey!

July 19, 2019 Launched on Hacker News (#2 right now!)

Finally posted Trennd as a Show HN. It was literally 40min ago - I’m pretty excited and anxious at the same time!

UPDATE: #2 right now 🤩🤙

You can check out the impact on Trennd’s traffic and subscriber count live on the open page too: https://trennd.co/open

You are #1 right now. Great Job!

    1. 1

Thanks man!! So happy with the result :)

  2. 1

How have you done it, any tips?

  3. 1

Hey Josh, congratulations! I just saw a tweet by Rand Fishkin about Trennd! 🙌

    1. 1

Thank you! I just saw it too - huge!!

  4. 1

This looks awesome! Question: How often are the trend data updated? Is it day-by-day basis?

    1. 1

Once every few days since the most granular data point are weekly

  5. 1

It's very cool, how do you plan to monetize it? A section with tips on how to lecerage every trend for pro member only could be a good idea. I would pay for it.

    1. 1

Yeah I'll make a pro version, but I'm trying to pinpoint the best premium features to build. How do you see the tips sections as? Maybe a list of business ideas associated with the trend?

      1. 1

Keep in mind that I have no technical knowledge so I don't know how hard it is to implement my suggestions. A list of business idea is a good starting point for sure. Other possibilities for content marketing (future topic and best form i.e. video, blog posts, type of blog post like list, how to guide and so on) and for programming languages (what you can build with x language and some websites/app that use it)

        1. 1

Very interesting, appreciate the suggestions! I'll have a think about how this could be done

  6. 1

Liked the traffic page. Nice way of creating a buzz around by showing the numbers. Great work @jhowarth15!!

July 5, 2019 Month 1 Summary: Reddit Validation

Subscribers: 353 🎉(207 from subscribe banner on home page and 146 from Product Hunt Ship)
Traffic/Users: 2,079 🕵️‍♀️
Trends: 872 📈
Insights: 52 👁

After the first 5 weeks I’m absolutely chuffed with the results. (That’s British slang for very pleased!)

I hadn’t set any goals, but 353 email subscribers is way beyond anything I expected.

At this initial pre-launch stage, I had mainly wanted to get some initial users to help iron out any wrinkles and bugs, and to point out any big holes in terms of functionality. And we did that.

But I’m even more pumped that the initial feedback was so overwhelmingly positive. And I’ve been able to take a lot of the feedback gathered to improve Trennd in lots of ways.

There's a more in-depth blog post of all the events: https://trennd.co/blog/june-19-update

@jhowarth15 this is a brilliant idea. Congratulations and keep growing!! If you are fine with sharing, do you use Google Trends API?

    1. 1

      Appreciate it @monikgandhi!! 🙌😄

Yeah the data is based on the google trends API and I have scripts that constantly monitor the web for interesting keywords and topics.

  2. 1

    Great Job! 👏👏
    Keep up the good work

Thank you so much @PrisK!! 😊

June 3, 2019 Public voted on new name: Trennd!

I ran a public twitter poll to decide on the new name for Trend List. Over 100 people voted and Trennd beat Trendful by a narrow margin! 🎉

Why did I rebrand? I discovered Trend List is also the brand name of a pretty big graphic design website. And there was no need to compete with their Domain Authority from the outset! 😁
