Started so many projects in the past, finally finished something small, and launching!

I've been lurking here for a few years (at least!), dreaming of building a side project that just one day might turn into the twitter post success stories we read about everyday of how someone left their dayjob because their side project turned into the main income...

Finding an idea, or building it never seemed to be the problem for me. I find new ideas all the time, and I'm capable enough to build most of them.
The biggest problem is choosing one (and only one), and actually finishing it.
I started so many side projects in the past - some of them I just started working on, and some almost to completion, but usually the last mile, adding the finishing touches is something that always breaks me and I find myself adding it to the graveyard of ideas I started but never actually completed.

TubeMail is something that started from my own problem - I wanted a way to get a simple digest in my inbox of new videos from the channels I follow.
I figured that if this is something that I want, perhaps someone else might benefit from it as well.
The idea is simple enough to build and more importantly, actually finish, so that's what I set out to do.

Worked on it a few nights here and there until I reached a point that I can call an MVP :)
There are many things I would like to improve or touch up, but as they say - "If you're not embarrassed by your MVP you're not releasing early enough".

Once I solve the problem, I'm satisfied 😂 Then I lose motivation for designing and marketing!

This looks interesting, congrats on the MVP. I think an example digest on the landing page would be really useful for prospective users

Thanks for the idea. I think you're totally right, and I will add that soon!! 💪🏻

    Love it, good luck Gillyb!

Love the idea! I'm definitely going to use this everyday.

      Happy to hear, thanks 🙏

Looks dope! Congrats on the MVP.
How was it working with the YouTube API?

    1. 2

Using the basic 'public' data from the YouTube api is very easy - search & channel info.
I wanted to add a feature to import the user's list of subscriptions automatically if they sign up with Google, but that's a pain since you need to pass some approval process in order to ask the user for data access. I might go through the process, but not sure I'm going to invest that much into this project.
(I plan on maintaining it as is, just not sure I'm going to add many features to it)

Hi Gilly, Great idea! I wanted to use it, but when I searched for the channel, I couldn't select anything.

Don't know what are the chances you'll see this, but all of a sudden I ran into the same bug, so I found out what caused it, and it should be fixed now. 😊

    2. 1

Seriously? You just click on the channel in the search drop down and it should add it to your digest. (it might take a second or two)

      1. 1

Yeah, I tried again and the same thing happened, even with waiting. I was using Chrome

Feature request: I like Seth Myers Closer Look, but I don't care about most of the many other videos. If you had a way to filter which videos trigger notifications based on the title, that would be awesome

        1. 1

First, thanks a lot for trying again!! :) I really appreciate it. I'll try to look into that issue and understand why it didn't work for you.
Regarding the filtering - Seems like a good idea. I might add that in the future! thanks :)

Congrats! I can definitely relate. I find that once the challenging part of the project is done I lose interest.

    1. 1

Exactly! Lots of times I realize im excited about an idea just because I want to build the main part I have in mind.. Then I build it, but have no motivation to create a landing page, contact page, design it, etc...

  8. 1

Can't say it solves a pain I have but its looking pretty cool

Very interesting project Gilly. I'm new here on IH as well, but will make sure to follow along.
