Hi All!
There are currently quite a number of image & video captioning apps to choose from,
and none of them really provided all of the features or UI ergonomics that I want when making memes.
Even desktop image editors like Gimp, Photoshop, or Krita, are surprisingly hard to cajole into rendering readable, nicely outlined (drop shadows don't count) text on top of an existing image, to say nothing of an animated GIF.
Ultime.me is a side project born of this productive dissatisfaction with available captioning tools. I also wanted a reason to escape the backend coding world and see what's up with this React thing that all of the cool kids seem to be talking about.
Unique Features:
- Almost everything is keyframe animatable, akin to the capabilities in Adobe Flash
- Can import most popular image and video formats
- Can export to png, jpg, high quality animated gif, and webm.
- Memes are private: Editor functions completely on the user browser, including video encoding. Only stats pings are sent to the server.
- Full touchscreen/mobile compatibility.
The Indie Hackers crowd has been inspirational during the creation of Ultime.me, so I wanted to throw it out here for an early debut.
I plan on continued updates while embarking on the quest to gain early adopters and eventually monetize.
The site is currently quite operational, but still just barely pre-MVP for the lack of a few key features, known bugs, tutorials, and almost criminally minimalistic UI.
With a little luck, even in this early state, perhaps a few kind readers may find the site to be useful :)
If anyone has feedback or feature requests, I'm all ears!
The current planned feature backlog is huge, and I plan on exposing it via a development blog fairly soon.
About
There are quite a few online meme editing apps to choose from. None provided the set of features that I desired: privacy, animation, and advanced typographic customization.

I really liked the concept..but thought you should add some instructions for total noobs like me..
maybe on the experiment meme page ?
give users like me some ideas or creative suggestions..a quick video featuring how to use the meme generator could be helpful
and you never told me how much fun it could be...or how i could use your product to make money from my memes
Good points and thanks for the feedback!
I think I need to step away from implementing features for a while and pay attention to the users and introducing them to the product.
Yes...I am very interested in your product because I have an idea for a website..memes on tshirts that users could order online...
I know you dont want to get trapped in the endless cycle of creating features..but simple instructions on how to PROPERLY use a product is vital to the onboarding process and customer satisfaction
Hey there, I love the idea although the interface is a little too dark for me (need to light up the screen to read the buttons).. I'll fiddle with it in my spare time :)
Thanks for the feedback! I'll try some color scheme tweaks across different monitor gamma settings for readability.
