May 17, 2023 The honest truth

Having freelanced for over 20 years, I experienced my peak about four years ago. Throughout my career, I've successfully managed multiple clients simultaneously. While I've had the opportunity to engage in deep product design jobs, involving user interviews and business strategies, most of the requests I got can be summarized as "make the logo bigger."

Sticking to design patterns, avoiding unnecessary reinvention of patterns, and being efficient have been the biggest drivers for getting the client to sign off a project. Speed and aesthetics are crucial, with the occasional odd project requiring a more deep approach, which typically accounts for about 25% of my workload. The remaining 75% is dedicated to quickly producing screen designs, yesterday.

However, as most of you in the freelance game probably also are realizing, is that the hourly model does not scale money wise. That's what I like to change for myself with Unbounded pixels. I deeply love the art of design and I can happily do nothing else till the day I die. And by using the "productised service" model, inspired by Brett from Designjoy, I think I should be able to reduce my working hours while maintaining or even increasing my income. This flexibility will enable me to experiment with different projects and delve more into coding while still providing for the fam.

I have no idea if this will work but Brett seems to have paved the way. So let's gooo! 🚀🚀🚀

About

I've been freelancing for ~20 years. Hourly pay for work just doesn't scale. I've hit that peak a while ago. I'm simply following Brett from Designjoy's footsteps here and like to see if I can make this work.
