Unleeweb
Unlimited web development agency for makers
I managed to convince my sister and an old friend to somewhat participate in my madness. Also got 2 signups from IH, so I'm going to assume that the copy on the landing page is not completely off-topic.
I am starting a very rough MVP for devs to able to take on tasks and be rewarded shares in a project.
The MVP version needs:
- ability to signup as a dev and see a list of tasks
- apply for a task (see details + reward + requirements + eta)
- once you applied, the site has to generate a github branch on the project and give the dev permission to work on this branch
- unlock the reward once the PR is merged and tests pass (test should be set by the PM)
- everything on the maker side will be managed by me manually for now. I will also pretend to be my own PM to simplify things.
This way I can build unleeweb using unleeweb
insert inception noises
I know this sounds like a lot but I will force myself to not spend more than 4-5 days on it.
Also I quickly setup a dev environment to be able to break everything all the time with no consequence whatsoever.
Feel free to ask any question in to comments or to contact@unleeweb.solutions (the email server is up starting now)
My landing page is just a bunch of sentences I found by researching related posts on IH. Some of it do not make sense but i will build from that later.
Right now I want to start a blog to write on the concept and see how people receive it. Maybe get 10-20 emails and start talking to them.

After thinking about this for months i finally decided to open my code editor and start something from scratch.
Here is my (overly simplified) thought process:
- As a dev, I want to spend my time on cool projects and I do not want to be be tied to a single project (I'm being difficult, i know...). The project I consider to be "cool" all have the same characteristics; I could not have thought of it myself, it is somewhat successful and it has some kind of technical challenge to it.
The only way I can think of reaching that kind of project is by opening a web development agency.
- I want to be able to take the risks associated to starting/jumping in a project and get some of the rewards associated with it. I also want to be able to edge.
One of the ways to do this is to enforce a share of revenue agreement.
- I want to shift the cost of starting a project within the agency from "you need to pay X money upfront/after" to "you need to perform X action upfront/after". It should be money-free to get started with the agency if you can show that you have "action currency".
The way I will implement this is kind of naïve. I will allow some amount of dev work to be done in exchange of specific "action currency". "I will build a prototype as described, in exchange you have to convince X people to sign up. If it is proven not possible to sign up X people, let's change the prototype up to Y times. Once X people have signed up we will start a new development cycle based on the data gathered and your insight".
This is very arbitrary but would allow both the maker and the dev to work in tandem (as a maker you will never have to "guess" if your dev can or cannot build something or find solutions, it will be obvious).
At most both the dev and the maker can only loose a maximum of 1 week (this is the amount of time I would feel comfortable working on something without feedback)
Conclusion
The odds of me succeeding at this are basically 0, but I feel compelled to try anyway. If it does not work and I go back to making video games tutorials. Right now i want to try something new.

@mikal, this is hilarious. I love your idea and your honesty. The chance of a client completing some difficult task upfront is indeed very low. It is so much easier to throw money at the problem and then ghost the developer for weeks with inaction. I learned that the hard way many times over.
Your odds may be better if you join good founders early. I think this is what Metalab did. I know a few successful people doing the same here in New Zealand.

maybe the task does not have to be difficult, what if I ask someone with an idea to gather 50 emails on a waiting list before I allow a development cycle to start? It's doable within a few days and would be a good green flag for someone who is committed to the product.

It would definitely filter out the disorganized or non-committal clients. I often do this with customer help requests. If what they ask me to do seems disproportionate to the benefit they derive I ask them to make some small action like find additional info or try something. If they come back to me with an answer I know it is important enough for them, so is important for me.
Keep me in mind if you need a back-end / solution engineer for this :)-

You can sign up on the dev side here: https://unleeweb.solutions/developer
I will be putting tasks on it in a few days. So if you want to earn revenue shares in unleeweb, I will definitely post high value tasks soon.
